Harwell comes to E.L. for signing

April 15, 2002

Ernie Harwell just began his 55th season of broadcasting major league baseball, and today the hall-of-famer will share some of his memories at a book signing on campus.

Harwell will make an appearance at MSU-Detroit College of Law from 3:30-4:30 p.m. to sign copies of his new book: “Ernie Harwell: My 60 years in Baseball.”

For the last 42 years, Harwell has been the familiar radio voice of the Detroit Tigers. Harwell announced earlier this season that this would be his last.

S. Gary Spicer, an adjunct professor at MSU-DCL, said having Harwell come to campus is a great chance for everyone to meet a legend.

“It’s a rare opportunity to meet someone so well-known in the state of Michigan,” Spicer said.

Spicer has been Harwell’s attorney for 20 years and said he was able to get Harwell to stop by because he already has planned to make a stop at Barnes & Noble, 333 E. Grand River Ave., from noon to 2 p.m.

Harwell will finish up his tour in Novi from 7-9 p.m.

Spicer said Harwell’s voice will be missed, but his legendary career will not be forgotten.

“I think Ernie Harwell is Tiger baseball,” Spicer said. “It’s difficult to listen to any broadcast without him.

“He’s everything sports should be.”
