Two men posing as charity solicitors threatened a Case Hall resident at knife point late Thursday, witnesses said.
MSU police officers on the scene said no one was seriously hurt.
The roommate of the victim entered the room and struck one of the intruders, causing the knife to drop and the men to flee, Case Hall resident Chris Johnson said.
The victim and the roommate declined comment.
"It is scary- this is the sixth floor of Case. It seems too random not to be planned," said Johnson, adding his own roommate notified police who responded before the phone was hung up.
Hall residents gathered in the hallway and nearby rooms, some curious, a few crying, as police officers and paramedics walked through.
Emphasizing the safety of the dorm, Case Hall Director Paul Rinella said such incidents are rare.
He also noted non-student group solicitation is not allowed in the dorms.
"I feel safer because there is a community," Rinella said, referring to the response of students on the floor.
Rinella said his staff alerted the rest of South Complex. Police appeared to be checking other nearby dorms, including Holden Hall.
