Suggestive flier raises eyebrows among greeks

A sexually suggestive flier promoting recruitment events for fraternity Phi Kappa Psi has officials questioning whether members of the group were the ones who distributed it in the first place.

The flier, which reads "Be A Dick, Rush Phi Kappa Psi," depicts a comic strip-type illustration with a stick figure choosing which fraternity to join.

The last scene shows the figure wearing a Phi Kappa Psi greek-letter T-shirt and its arms around two female stick figures with the words "Chicks Love Dick" at the bottom.

Recruitment concluded for Interfraternity Council chapters last week. Phi Kappa Psi representatives refused to comment and would not say whether their group was the one distributing the flier.

Greek Life adviser Amy Radford, who learned of the flier Monday, said it's possible the fraternity wasn't the group that distributed it.

"If this was an outside group attacking them, that's not out of the question," she said.

Radford said she is meeting with Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council members to discuss the incident.

Interfraternity Council President Anthony Morabito said the issue shouldn't be brushed aside.

"I feel it's an important issue, and we're going to get to the bottom of it," he said.

Morabito added if the fraternity is reprimanded, they will have to pay a fine, be placed on probation from the Interfraternity Council or perform community service.

Krystal Alexander, a member of campus group Women United, said the flier degrades women.

"It sets us back 100 years," the biosystems engineering senior said. "It shows the mindset hasn't changed.

"Time has progressed, but not for women."

Phi Kappa Psi, 522 Abbott Road, was chartered at MSU in 1954. The national organization celebrated its 150th anniversary last year.

This is the second time in a month a flier has generated controversy on MSU's campus.

On Jan. 11, a flier found in Shaw Hall invited students to a "White Caucus" event.

The flier showed a naked pregnant woman and was written partially in German. The text translated to "The eighth annual 2003 International Sodomy Performance" and "An orgasmic night from the heathen intercourse," according to German Professor Karin Wurst.
