Local pizzerias top off collegiate experience

August 25, 2004
Patrons of Georgio's Gourmet Pizzeria are silhouetted during lunch hour. The pizza eatery makes over 40 varieties of pizza including the Mediterannean and salad pizza.

Along with going to your first house party and having quarrels with unwanted roommates, there is one other true staple of college life - pizza.

The search for the perfect slice can lead in many directions, but trying new places during your late night pizza cravings is the only way to find the pizza parlor right for you.

The first stop on the after-hours pizza express is Cottage Inn Pizza, located at 615 E. Grand River Ave. Cottage Inn offers an extensive variety of specialty pizzas, including Greek, southwestern chicken, pesto primavera and spicy Mediterranean pizzas.

"People really like the specialty pizza we offer and the freshness of the ingredients," said Andrea Cholostek, a driver for Cottage Inn.

Cottage Inn is open for delivery every day until 3 a.m. and offers specials such as a 99-cent second pizza of any size, when any pizza of the same size is purchased at regular price.

Continuing the pizza extravaganza, Georgio's Gourmet Pizza offers specialty slices of unique combinations at new locations.

The Georgio's Gourmet Pizza located at 120 Charles St., is open 11 a.m. to 4 a.m. every day. The second Georgio's, located at 1010 E. Grand River Ave., is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

"We have all kinds of gourmet pizza, like potato, nacho, lasagna and stuffed spinach," said Maria Hruska, the manager at the Georgio's on Grand River Avenue. "We have 35-40 different kinds (of pizza)."

Hruska said on an average day during the lunch rush, about 150 slices are sold at her business. Slices range from $1.50 for cheese only to $3.49 for slices such as stuffed spinach.

The next stop on the late night pizza search is Papiano's Pizza, 1219 E. Grand River Ave., offering free delivery for any pizza purchase.

"I think people come to Papiano's because of the high food quality, and it is cheap," Papiano's manager James Kelly said.

Another place for a late evening slice is Bell's Greek Pizza, which has two locations at 1135 E. Grand River Ave. and 225 M.A.C. Ave.

Bell's offers pepperoni slices for 89 cents and is open 10 a.m. to 4 a.m. every day. The pizzeria also offers free delivery for any pizza purchase.

Lastly, after a long evening of searching ends up at Gumby's Pizza, home of the cheese bread known as Pokey Stix. Manager Drew Slack said Pokey Stix are by far the biggest draw at Gumby's. They also pride themselves in their friendly service and atmosphere.

"We are a businesslike place, but we try to be friendly," Slack said.

Gumby's has an extensive value menu that includes items such as a large two-topping pizza, a large order of Pokey Stix or a calzone and a soda, all of which are priced at $6.99.

Finding the pizza place that is right for anyone might seem overwhelming at first, but through trial and error one can be on his or her way to late night pizza utopia.
