Destiny's Child fans, get ready for nothing more than a mediocre experience. The group's new CD "Destiny Fulfilled" is, by far, the groups most boring project yet.
Don't be fooled by the banging first single "Lose My Breath," a Rodney Jerkins production driven by an addictive hook and a drum line that sounds a lot like the one in the movie, "Drumline."
The second single "Soldier," featuring rappers T.I. and Lil' Wayne, is an ode to the hood that is sure to keep the ladies singing: "I need a soldier/that ain't scared to stand up for me/Got to know to get dough and he better be street."
Are you serious, people?
Group member Michelle Williams has released two gospel albums. What could she possibly want with a man that's "street?" The song is hot, but it sounds like teenage girls caught up in the glamour of cars, money and status.
Don't expect to see the girls dressed up in fatigues and dancing on the beach, like they did for the "Survivor" video, or decked out in old-school gear as they are seen in the "Bootylicious" video. Instead, videos for the 11 songs on this CD should include the group in French maid uniforms serving men for the song "Cater 2 U," and Kelly Roland with a fat lip and bruised ego as she sings about her man mistreating her in "Girl."
In "Cater 2 U," Beyoncé Knowles sings about giving her man a foot massage, and Kelly sings, "I'll keep it tight, I'll keep my figure right, I'll keep my hair fixed, keep rockin' the hottest outfits." Weren't these the same girls that were talking about being so independent in 2001 on their "Survivor" album?
Perhaps this CD was suppose to express the group's more grown-up image. However, it comes off like a collection of sob stories sung by three girls and put to music. That's correct people, all three members of the group sang on this CD.
Listeners can expect to hear the familiar voices of Knowles and Roland, as well as some raspy unfamiliar sound. Oh wait, that's Williams, the third and sometimes forgotten member of the group.
In all but a few songs, the verses are divided into three sections, with Knowles leading, followed by Roland, and then Williams. During the choruses, their voices combine for some perfectly groomed harmonies.
"Destiny Fulfilled" was said to be completed in three weeks, and it shows. It seems like the group quickly put something together to fill the obligation of completing another CD together after they each went solo.
Now that it's finished, the group needs to return to the independent bootylicious girls they once were, or part ways. Knowles can continue being a "Naughty Girl," while Roland gets married to Dallas Cowboys safety Roy Williams and starts having babies, leaving Williams to keep praising God.
Suggested listening: When you're upset with your boyfriend and can't find the words to express yourself.
