MSU's oldest athletic facility might get a $4 million facelift.
Old College Field, the field that hosts baseball, softball and soccer games, is expected to be renovated using funds from drives co-chaired by former MSU baseball stars Kirk Gibson and Mark Mulder in a campaign dubbed "New Life for Old College Field."
Originally bought for about $1,137 in 1900, Old College Field first served the MSU football team from 1902-22.
More than a century later, Gibson and Mulder hope to help raise at least $4 million for improvements to the field including new stands, lighting, covered hitting facilities, outfield fencing and an enhanced entranceway.
"There's great tradition at Old College Field, and these improvements have been on the back burner for some time," MSU Athletics Director Ron Mason said in a statement. "I'm both pleased and proud to have two distinguished Spartans, Kirk Gibson and Mark Mulder, acting as national co-chairs for this important project."
Gibson starred at MSU from 1975-78, earning All-America in both baseball and football in 1978. During four years on the gridiron, Gibson recorded 112 receptions for 2,347 yards and 24 touchdowns.
In his third year as bench coach for the Detroit Tigers, the Waterford native won two World Series - one in 1984 with the Tigers and another in 1988 with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Mulder, who set an MSU single-season record in strikeouts with 113 strikeouts, was a two-time All-Big Ten honoree. The South Holland, Ill., native is in his first season with the St. Louis Cardinals following a trade from the Oakland Athletics. In 2001, Mulder came in second in votes for the A.L. Cy Young Award, given to the best pitchers in the Major Leagues.
