Student body must end words of hate
(Last updated: 08/28/09 6:30pm) We need to stop saying hateful things to each other. I am writing in response to Thea Neal and Tara Thoel's article "Students protest with silence" (SN 4/19), on The Day of Silence. As I walked through campus Wednesday, it made me happy to see students holding fliers and receiving an education about issues they may not be familiar with. What saddens me are the negative things said by some of our students. The article mentioned one in particular that caught my eye: "You're going to hell. I'm not taking your flier." I can't believe these kinds of words come out of the mouths of my fellow classmates. I find it ironic that what this peaceful demonstration is protesting is this very type of abuse.
MSU is an extremely diverse university filled with students from all over the world with many different views and beliefs. I am aware that with diversity comes many differences in opinion, but that does not give us the right to abuse each other. As students, we all share a common goal, and that is to receive an education. We may not all agree with what is ultimately right or wrong, but we have got to stop saying hateful things to each other. It sounds so simple, but we need to start exercising some kindness and stop hurting one other.
