E.L. man caught at border with drugs
Tweet A 24-year-old East Lansing man was arrested for attempting to transport 20 pounds of marijuana into Michigan from Canada, Port Huron police Lt. Dennis Marey said.
Scott Mayol, an MSU alumnus, was arraigned Tuesday and released on a $5,000 personal bond in St. Clair County's 72nd District Court.
Mayol was attempting to cross the Blue Water Bridge into Michigan when he was stopped.
Repeated phone calls to Mayol were not returned to The State News.
His father, Dale Mayol, was unaware of his son's arrest and declined to comment Wednesday.
If convicted, Mayol could face up to seven years in prison, Ingham County Assistant Prosecutor Guy Sweet said.
Mayol doesn't have a prior criminal record.
"The maximum would be seven years, but with no priors, there's a chance he can get probation and some jail time," Sweet said.
This isn't the first time an East Lansing resident, or an MSU student, has been caught with large quantities of an illegal drug.
In March, Tri-County Metro Narcotics Squad found about 7 pounds of marijuana and a large amount of money in an MSU student's home.
The East Lansing Police Department has not released the name of the student or the exact details of the crime because the case remains open.
Police still are trying to pinpoint other sources of illegal drugs by using the student, East Lansing police Capt. Kim Johnson said.
A pound of marijuana equates to $1,000, depending on the quality. Seven pounds of marijuana would carry the street value of about $7,000, and 20 pounds would equal $20,000.
Mayol is scheduled to appear at 9 a.m. July 31 under Judge Cynthia Platzer.
