Student enters contest to honor friend

September 25, 2007

Josef Magsig, a medical technology junior, remembers the day his good friend Steve Lobdell called to tell him he had Hodgkin’s disease.

When Lobdell passed away on Sept. 4, 2006, he lost his friend of five years. Now, he has a chance to pay tribute to him.

Magsig entered a contest sponsored by Detroit Tigers’ third baseman Brandon Inge and his wife to have a room in C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital at the University of Michigan named after his friend.

Magsig said Lobdell and Inge met during one of Inge’s regular visits to the hospital. After speaking with Lobdell, Inge actually wore a bracelet bearing his name for a portion of the season and again on the one-year anniversary of his death.

His entry is titled “Dreamland,” in honor of Lobdell’s relationship with Inge.

The last day of voting is September 27. If his idea is chosen, Magsig said he knows his friend would have been excited.
