ASMSU makes voter registration No. 1 concern

October 29, 2007

ASMSU’s Director of Government Affairs Matt Patton said one of the undergraduate student government’s top priorities this year is registering students to vote.

ASMSU will be working to register students on a rolling basis.

“At every event we have, we are going to be registering people to vote,” Patton said.

“There will also be registration forms in our business office so any student who comes in can ask for them.”

ASMSU also teamed up with YouVote and the MSU Residence Halls Association to register seven times as many people as last year — bringing the count to 266.

Some MSU students don’t see ASMSU, or other student groups, putting a lot of effort into registering students to vote.

ASMSU has not done enough in my opinion,” mechanical engineering sophomore Sachin Golhar said.

“They did not even mention it and publicize it at all. Students here at MSU need to understand the value and the importance of voting because that is our way of expressing our opinions and it is a way that we have a voice. ASMSU should have voting their top priority to make it a lot easier for us to have a voice.”

Computer science freshman Dean Valenti said he thinks student groups are doing a good job registering students to vote.

However, he said he doesn’t think the groups are focusing on the real issue.

“Obviously, more people could be registered to vote, but there is still a lot of apathy, which isn’t likely to just disappear instantly,” he said.

To boost the numbers in early November, ASMSU plans on setting up tables near cafeteria entrances for students to easily register.

“College transitions students into productive members of society and voting is one of their civic duties,” said Nigel Scarlett, ASMSU vice chairperson of external affairs.

“This is very important, especially in college. It is the duty of government affairs and ASMSU as a whole to remind students. We want to make it easier, letting students know that all they have to do is sign here and here.”

Some international students said they would like student groups to teach them more about it.

“One fact is that awareness of the whole scene is required,” said electrical engineering sophomore Sohaib Imran.

“Give out flyers, leaflets and post it in the newspapers. We should be given an opportunity as in how the whole tool of election is to be used,” said Imran, who is from Saudi Arabia.
