The No. 6 MSU hockey team extended its winning streak to six games with a pair of 3-1 wins over Alaska on Friday and Saturday in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The Spartans (6-1-0 overall, 4-0-0 CCHA) found themselves in an early 1-0 hole Friday, but two power play goals by junior forward Tim Kennedy gave MSU a 2-1 lead in the third period.

Senior defenseman Daniel Vukovic put the game away with an unassisted empty-net goal in the final 15 seconds. The goal gave him three points for the night, as he assisted in both of Kennedy’s goals.

Junior goaltender Jeff Lerg started his 61st consecutive game, breaking the school record of 60 that was set by Joe Selinger in the late 1950s. Lerg made 21 saves.

Saturday, it was the Spartans that jumped out in front early, as senior captain Bryan Lerg deflected freshman defenseman Jeff Petry’s point shot into the goal.

The lead was short-lived as the Nanooks’ Landon Novotney tied the game at one just over seven minutes later.

The Spartans lost junior forward Justin Abdelkader early in the second period after he was ejected from the game and received a five-minute major for hitting from behind and a game misconduct.

MSU was able to fend off the Nanooks’ power play and, later in the period, Vukovic once again made his presence known, scoring his second goal of the season on the power play.

Once again, the Spartans were able to put the game on ice with an empty-netter, as Kennedy scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season to give MSU another 3-1 win. Petry and Vukovic picked up the helpers.

Jeff Lerg extended his record to 62 straight games with 26 saves on the night, including 11 in the third period.

Vukovic and Kennedy combined for nine points on the weekend.

The Spartans return to action Friday when they battle Mercyhurst in a weekend series at Munn Ice Arena.
