Bubbling with humble pride, Vic Loomis cracked a smile while walking up to the podium at City Hall to officially accept his new position.
Loomis was unanimously selected by the East Lansing City Council on Wednesday to serve as mayor during a ceremonious council meeting in Courtroom 2 of the 54-B District Court, 101 Linden St.
Loomis will fill the void left by former Mayor Sam Singh, who, after two years as mayor, announced he wouldn’t run for re-election.
“I want to thank the council for your vote of confidence in providing me this opportunity to serve in the city that I grew up in as its mayor,” Loomis said.
“It is both a privilege and an honor for me to serve in this capacity. I really look forward to working with all of my colleagues.”
After Loomis was sworn in, council members unanimously selected Diane Goddeeris to replace Loomis as East Lansing’s new mayor pro tem.
Goddeeris said she’s excited to team up with her colleagues and make the city proud.
Before the appointments, new Councilmembers Roger Peters and Nathan Triplett and re-elected Mayor Pro Tem Goddeeris were officially sworn into the City Council.
The three were elected by community voters during the Nov. 6 City Council elections.
Loomis was elected to the City Council in 2001 and re-elected in 2005.
Prior to his work on the council, he was chairman of the Downtown Development Authority, or DDA, and a member of the Comprehensive Plan Team.
An East Lansing resident since 1949, Loomis graduated from MSU in 1972 with a degree in business administration. Professionally, he works for the Michigan Bankers Association.
Singh, who watched his first City Council meeting from the audience in about a decade, said Loomis was the ideal choice for the city.
“Mayor Loomis has great experience living in this community — from childhood to his work in the banking industry to his work with the DDA and his past six years on the council,” Singh said. “He will definitely bring great leadership to the city.”
