Water main break causes traffic shift

November 6, 2007

A lane shift was implemented on westbound Michigan Avenue near Harrison Road on Tuesday, so city officials could repair an 8-inch water main break that occurred near the intersection.

Officials located the break and are in the process of repairing it, said Mel Chapman, East Lansing’s utilities supervisor.

“We’re going to schedule a road repair (Wednesday) and hopefully have everything opened back up by noon at the latest,” he said.

Changing weather and fluctuating pressures might have caused the break, but the city doesn’t know for sure, Chapman said.

“It was a just main break that for whatever reason appeared,” he said. “No one caused the break, but we located it and are in the process of repairing it.”
