The MSU Board of Trustees voted to proceed on a $13.3 million recycling center and surplus store at its meeting Friday.
The facility is scheduled to begin construction in June, with “substantial” completion expected by July 2009. The facility will be self-supporting with a maximum of 12 years until the $13.3 million is repaid.
Fred Poston, vice president for finance and operations, said he’d never seen faculty and students get behind a project so strongly.
“I would have to say in some sense, it’s been a long time coming,” Poston said of MSU’s need for the facility.
Trustee Joel Ferguson said a year and a half ago, students gave presentations to the board regarding MSU’s environmental woes.
The presentations, which revealed MSU had been last place in the Big Ten in recycling, struck a chord with Ferguson and the board.
“We do listen to students,” Ferguson said.
