East Lansing police are investigating a reported armed robbery that occurred at 2:30 a.m. Sunday while the victim was walking down Albert Avenue between Orchard and Kedzie streets.
The victim reported that a suspect approached him or her from behind, pulled a gun and demanded money, East Lansing police Sgt. Carl Nowak said.
The victim was not injured in the robbery, but the suspect was able to get away with an undisclosed amount of money.
Police have no description of the suspect involved in the robbery but are continuing to investigate the incident, Nowak said. A description of the suspect was not available.
Nowak said students who live on nearby streets are not in any danger.
He added that the businesses in the area are not in danger either.
But students who live in the area or visit homes in the neighborhood say they are fearful of becoming victims of similar robberies.
Prenursing sophomore Devin Brent said he was walking to his brother’s Orchard Street house Sunday morning at the time the robbery occurred.
Although Brent didn’t see or hear about the incident, he said he isn’t normally afraid of being robbed while walking alone at night.
“Just fear of something like that happening makes it that much worse,” Brent said. “I just don’t think about it ? if it happens, that’s when you get scared.”
Devin Brent’s brother, Alan Brent, said he typically feels safe enough in his neighborhood that he doesn’t feel the need to lock his doors at night.
But after Sunday’s armed robbery and hearing someone enter and leave his house while he was asleep the same night, he will take more precautions.
“It was kind of weird,” said Alan Brent, an interdisciplinary studies in social science senior. “(Both incidents) will definitely make us lock the door every night for sure.”
