Formula racing goes to Cobo Center
The MSU Formula Racing team will be taking to the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit to display their cars and lure possible investors.
This is the third consecutive year the group has traveled to the event, which starts Saturday and runs through Jan. 27.
The team, which builds, designs and drives its own cars, is showing off its 2006 and 2007 models as well as a third car suspended in the air. In addition to the public show, the team uses the event to network with potential employers at the world’s epicenter of automotive activity.
“It’s a really amazing activity to represent our school down there,” said Andy Gryczan, a mechanical engineering senior and leader of the driving team.
Adam Zemke, a mechanical engineering graduate student who serves as operations manager for the team, said the group tries to treat the event as any car manufacturer on the main floor would.
“This is an event that helps publicity for not only the students, but for sponsors that help out the team,” Zemke said.
Zemke said the team’s annual budget is more than $500,000 with contributions coming from about 140 companies last year.
