“We started the nonprofit organization to help Bolivia,” said Sologuren-Sanchez, an international planning studies and special education junior.

Sologuren-Sanchez is an international student from Bolivia, which is the second poorest country in Latin America.

By donating money to the Inter-American Development Fund’s beach soccer arena project, Latinos on the Move hopes to make life better for children in her home country.

“The point of this project is to motivate kids to get out of drugs and become involved with sports,” supply chain management senior Oliver Garcia said.

Garcia also is an international student from Bolivia involved with Latinos on the Move. He said the part of the country where the beach soccer arena is being built — the south — is Bolivia’s poorest area.

“I live (in Bolivia) and I know the area pretty well,” he said.

Latinos on the Move began with 10 students when Sologuren-Sanchez founded the organization in fall 2007. It currently has about 60 active members.

Criminal justice junior Jorge Facundo helps the group raise money by planning fundraising events. Facundo got the idea to have Latinos on the Move volunteer at Cedar Point during Halloween weekend from friends who often volunteer at the amusement park.

“I worked in the arcade giving out prizes,” he said. “Cedar Point took care of our housing and food, and we got to go on rides for free.”

Together, the students made more than $3,000 volunteering at the park for two days.

That money, along with the other money the group collected from Salsa dancing lessons and other events on campus, is donated to the beach soccer arena project, which will be completed between February and May.

“Beach soccer is becoming really popular all over the world,” Sologuren-Sanchez said.
