E.L. officials hear criticisms, plan to reduce redevelopment

February 25, 2008

City officials said Monday they will examine ways to reduce the number of apartments, condominiums and parking spaces for the proposed City Center II project after receiving criticism from citizens and MSU.

The announcement was made at a forum Monday at Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road. Residents voiced concerns about the proposed development of the land bordered by Abbot Road and Grand River Avenue.

Advertising senior Amanda Bendrey, who’s interning with the University Student Commission, said she fears the development’s high-end apartments could increase rent prices on surrounding rental properties.

“A big concern is that the parking structure is going to be destroying affordable student rental housing,” she said.

“It’s just going to drive the affordability level of student rental housing through the roof.”

With the MSU Museum opting out of the project, the city should work closely with residents when adjusting the development, East Lansing resident Phil Bellfy said.

Bellfy introduced a motion to the City Council that could have limited the city’s use of eminent domain. It was voted down last week.

“We should go through that same process all over again,” Bellfy said.

Because site plans were created with the expectation that the MSU Museum would move into City Center II, the change could lessen the amount of parking spots the garage needs, said Jim van Ravensway, East Lansing’s director of Planning and Community Development.

The city received a letter from MSU on Friday stating that it doesn’t plan on moving the MSU Museum to the development, van Ravensway said.

MSU still intends to partner with the city on the project, possibly by using proposed theater space for lectures, films and concerts, van Ravensway said.

The university also is considering using space to showcase art created by students and university staff, he said.
