Faculty Council to consider update

February 12, 2008

A report detailing the recommendations for restructuring academic governance at MSU is a long time coming for some Faculty Council members.

The report, Faculty Voice Task Force 1, was brought to Faculty Council in fall 2006, which has worked to complete restructuring by this semester’s end.

Jon Sticklen, an at-large member of the Executive Committee of Academic Council, or ECAC, said although members might be feeling the push, it’s most important to understand what the report means.

Faculty Council will host a teach-in session at 3:30 p.m. today in the Radiology Building auditorium for faculty who wanted clarification on Task Force 1. The council will move forward with discussions in a Feb. 19 meeting.

Jim Potchen, chairman of ECAC, said it’s important for Faculty Council to be aware of the proposed substantial changes to academic governance.

“It’s quite controversial,” he said. “Some people feel they haven’t been adequately heard on the issue.”

Some of the recommendations of the original Faculty Voice Report include the creation of a six-member Faculty Executive Committee and increased voice for fixed-term faculty members.

“(Task Force 1) was enacted so faculty can feel the governance system works for them, but too often it doesn’t seem that way,” Sticklen said.

John Beck, facilitator of the session, said the purpose of the session Wednesday is to explain the report and maximize faculty participation.

Although some problems highlighted in the report no longer exist, Potchen said the report will allow for more faculty to be heard on issues they care about.

Faculty Council members’ concern that some of the material in the report was not appropriate for direct consideration also has slowed progress, Sticklen said.

Sticklen said his biggest goal for Task Force 1 is for members to clearly see the issues for what they are and to respond in consensus. He expects the report to be passed along to Academic Council in the fall.

“I think we definitely need more time to get the process to completion,” he said.
