Ferrell captures audience in 'hilarious' performance

Ron Burgundy.

Tom Izzo.

Little Orphan Annie.

Two out of these three characters may be fictional, but Tuesday night, all three of them graced the stage of Breslin Center for “Will Ferrell’s Funny or Die College Comedy Tour.”

With an all-star line-up including Ferrell, Nick Swardson, Demetri Martin and Zach Galifianakis, it would have required the group to not show up for it to go poorly.

And for a split-second there, that looked like it might have happened.

After a plane delay and ridiculously long sound-check, Ferrell canceled the majority of his media interviews, setting a foul taste with area reporters.

At the show, when Ferrell burst on stage donning a University of Michigan sweatshirt, it seemed as if he had put a bad taste in the mouths of many Spartans.

But as if he was trying to gain back the affection of both reporters and students, Ferrell ripped off the sweatshirt, tearing it straight between the “I” and “G,” revealing a crisp green MSU sweatshirt.

The green and white pride that was throughout the show was intimidating. Adam McKay posed as the show’s clever announcer, making inappropriate (yet hilarious) jokes at most given moments. McKay, also known as the father of Pearl from the online clip “The Landlord,” proudly wore an MSU hat to match Ferrell’s duds.

Swardson made jokes about drunk runs to Taco Bell, Martin participated in witty banter with the audience’s loud females, and Galifianakis encouraged students to vote in the next presidential election.

It was as if the guys couldn’t get the students any more involved when Ferrell brought out the big guns.

Ron Burgundy and Tom Izzo. On the same stage.

Ferrell dressed up as the fictional character from “Anchorman: The Legend of Run Burgundy,” in order to “interview” the MSU head basketball coach. Ferrell drilled Izzo on if he was a “legal dwarf,” and their times in the “National Guard together.”

There were times when a hoarse Izzo had to literally hold his hand over his mouth to keep the laughter from spouting out of his mouth – a nice change from the stern Izzo we often see on the sidelines.

Galifianakis also took the costume approach, only he preferred drag. In the tiny white-collared red dress worn in “Annie,” Galifianakis lip-synched “Tomorrow” with as much chutzpah as the little redhead herself. Things got a little awkward however, when the bearded man decided to flash his pink underwear to the audience.

The show was exactly what you would expect from Ferrell and crew. Outlandish, edgy and hilarious. But it wasn’t just dirty jokes or underwear flashing. It was the fact that Ferrell truly acknowledged his crowd that made him an honorary Spartan.

Thea,

Who really cares that Ferrell had to cut some of the media show. Quit being selfish and realize that stuff happens (like planes being delayed because of weather, go to China for Heaven’s sake!). I’d be willing to bet that Will Ferrell didn’t even cancel the media interviews but that it was like a tour manager or something. Do you really think he has the time to be involved in those sort of decisions?

Please use a little common sense when writing your articles. They might make them a bit better.

On the other hand, the show was PHENOMENAL!!! Kudos to whoever put on the show! Zach and Demitri were hilarious. And Ron Burgundy… oh Ron! Tom Izzo, what a sport! Great show, great time!

I was very disappointed with Demitri Martin and found that some of his jokes were recycled. The only thing I think I really liked from him was the Jesus/Pot relationship chart.

Galifianakis and Swardson were very funny. I laughed so hard that I cried at the joke Swardson made about how he would commit suicide. Zach had a lot of one-liners but still was really funny.

I was dissapointed with the questions that were asked by the audience, yet I don’t think I could have come up with any good one’s myself. The Burgandy interview with Izzo was probably the highlight of my night. I wasn’t expecting Ferrell to be dressed as Burgandy and I certainly wasn’t expecting an interview with Izzo…one that I will probably never forget.

I agree with Drew. Demetri Martin didn’t really do it for me, but everything else was awesome and my stomach hurt from laughing so hard!

I am not sure, Who sponsored the show?

I have some news for you. If journalists are the scum of the earth, you and most of your colleagues at the state news represent whatever that scum feeds on. It’s a gift that you had the opportunity that you did, to even be included with the rest of the media. Report the news, not your personal agenda. It was a great show and it went off without a hitch. No one cares whether you got what you wanted.

Where are your pictures of the show? I was unfortunate to not go to the show, so please enlighten us non-attendees with a picture of Izzo and Ferrell on stage!

To the reporter that is obviously a hack. This is an opinion piece, so relax. You are one of the people who never have an opinion until the boss gives it to you, so go back to writing swag and let some that still have a pulse, enjoy life.

p.s. “80% of the time, your writing sucks all the time”

The first comment on this article is rude and just rediculouse. Why don’t you use a little common sense when reading an article. She wrote a fact that was interesting and simply stated that area reporters couldn’t have been happy about it. Sounds pretty solid to me…so shut the truck up first-commenter you.

What’s with all the hate in the rest of the comments as well? I don’t get it. (and I am well aware of my horrible spelling in the other comment.)

I was at the show and it was hilarious. Here are some pictures that I took of Ferrell and Izzo.

I really am sick of listening to the media whine when they don’t get interviews. As if you jokers are entitled to meet with every third rate celebrity that comes to campus. Who the hell cares if he wore a MSU shirt or hat? I mean seriously, if that made the show for you than you’re a total loser.

I have nothing better to do than try to make myself feel better by degrading other people on the statenews.com comments sections. Damn, my life sucks.

to drew b, to say that demitri martin was a disappointment is ridiculous because he was his regular hysterical self and most of his act was all new stuff whereas swardson was hilarious also but the ending of his act about getting old was recycled from his fist stand up on comedy central. oh and zach had a lot of one liners because well news flash, thats his comedy style just like demitri

It was my Birthday that night and the tickets were a gift. The show was hilarious! I enjoyed every minute of it. Zack and Nick were awesome, demitri made me laugh too. Why does there always have to be drama in these comments..

Ferrell canceled the media roundtables. His handlers tried to make it happen.

We sat around for nearly six hours waiting, and some people drove from across the state to do the roundtable.

I wouldn’t have put it in my story, but I can see how it is relevant. Also, it explains why Ferrell was unable to be quoted for the story.
