Icers overcome Nebraska-Omaha

February 2, 2008

The Spartans celebrate after freshman forward Andrew Rowe scores during the second period against Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday at Munn Ice Arena. The Spartans defeated Nebraska-Omaha 4-2 after losing on Friday.

After a disappointing performance the night before, the MSU hockey team came out firing Saturday evening at Munn Ice Arena.

The No. 5 Spartans scored 69 seconds into the game then poured in three more in the first five minutes of the second period to defeat Nebraska-Omaha, 4-2.

“Tonight was critical,” MSU head coach Rick Comley said. “Overall, it was a pretty darned good game.”

Senior captain Bryan Lerg scored MSU’s first and third goals while assisting on another.

Junior goaltender Jeff Lerg rebounded from a tough night on Friday with 37 saves, including stoning Bill Bagron on a penalty shot with 57 seconds left in the game.

Freshman forward Andrew Rowe, who was moved up to the second line, responded with a goal and two assists.

“They guys did a good job reacting,” senior defenseman Daniel Vukovic said. “And the outcome was what we wanted.”

The Spartans return to the ice Friday when they travel to Northern Michigan.
