Rap music, cold bath part of Summers' pregame

February 11, 2008

Summers

The State News tracked down freshman guard Durrell Summers to find out what life is like as a newcomer to MSU basketball head coach Tom Izzo’s team.

Summers touched on everything from mashed potatoes to away games as he gave a little insight into his day-to-day activities.

The State News: What’s your favorite pregame meal?

Durrell Summers: My favorite pregame meal? Probably steak and corn and mashed potatoes and a little broccoli. And I gotta get my pineapples and grape juice.

SN: What’s your favorite pregame music?

DS: I listen to some Lil Wayne. Or Cassidy. I think those might be the main ones, Lil Wayne and Cassidy.

SN: Do you have any pregame rituals?

DS: I get in a cold bath. Then I dress up, put my gear on and I take a nap in the locker room in the chair.

SN: How and why did you start playing basketball?

DS: I first started when I was younger. My grand-dad, he used to play with the (Harlem) Globetrotters so he used to work with me when I was younger. He bought me a little Fisher Price hoop and I used to be in my room just running and dunking. Eventually I tore up and started getting a little bigger. I think it started from there.

SN: What’s your favorite spot on campus to hang out?

DS: I’ll give you my three. Locker room. My room, or the suites because all the freshmen are in there so we hang in there most of the time. My third spot is probably the café. You gotta eat.

SN: What’s the most challenging aspect of being a student athlete?

DS: Those nights after you got an away game. Say you’re playing at 9 p.m. You get back at about 3 a.m. and then get up to go to class. That’s probably the toughest thing. Three hours of sleep, then you gotta go to an 8 a.m. That’s tough.

SN: Who were your basketball idols growing up?

DS: (Michael) Jordan and now it’s Kobe (Bryant).

SN: Three words to describe yourself.

DS: Laid back, calm and just silly.
