Residents, city to discuss City Center II project

February 24, 2008

Students and residents will have an opportunity today to critique a $117 million project that could lead to the elimination of rental housing along the 300 and 400 blocks of Evergreen Avenue.

The discussion will be at 6 p.m. at Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road.

The City Center II project aims to redevelop land between Abbot Road and Grand River Avenue. If the project is approved by the East Lansing City Council, rental housing would be demolished to build a 621-space parking garage that would serve the development’s high-end apartments, condominiums and businesses.

Monday’s meeting will begin with a presentation by city planning officials, followed by a question-and-answer session.

East Lansing Mayor Vic Loomis said city officials will examine issues residents oppose.

“It’s an opportunity to have some dialogue,” Loomis said.

Ann Nichols, president of the Oakwood Historical District Neighborhood Association, will mediate the question-and-answer session. The neighborhood includes the proposed development.

“What we lose are our own real neighbors and what we get is a parking structure that is paid for by taxpayer dollars,” Nichols said. “That’s not really a neighbor — that’s more like a little piece of Manhattan moving into the neighborhood.”

Communication senior Michael Savoni has lived at 340 Evergreen Ave. for about two years. He said he can afford the $500 per month rent, but questions whether many students could afford to live in the development’s apartments.

“I think students might start living in the dorms for two years and not one year, and some students might start moving out to Chandler Crossings,” Savoni said.
