Hello, my name is Tricia Simon

Despite growing up on a lake, underwater hockey was a foreign concept to Tricia Simon, a veterinary medicine graduate student who had plenty of experience with water sports.

“I just saw a flyer for underwater hockey and thought, ‘What is that?” she said. “I needed to find out.”

At the time, the Underwater Hockey Club was part of the MSU SCUBA Club, Simon said. This is the first year the club has been independent and has about 25 practicing members, 15 of whom regularly travel to tournaments.

Underwater hockey is a no-contact sport played in 30-minute halves with six people in the pool at a time. Players use handheld sticks about a foot in length to pass the puck and try to score a goal. Players wear snorkels, fins and goggles. Simon said experience isn’t required to join the club, but it does help.

“I’ve noticed the people who swam in high school are really good, They have the speed and they’re the most comfortable in the water.”
