Valerie Hemingway, the former secretary to Ernest Hemingway, who later married his son Gregory, will visit the Library of Michigan, 702 W. Kalamazoo St., in Lansing, at 5 p.m. Wednesday for a book signing, followed by a presentation to promote a program called The Great Michigan Read.

The Michigan Humanities Council, or MHC, wants everybody in Michigan to hit the books, which is why it created this statewide program. It was launched in June 2007 with the goal of getting residents across Michigan to read “The Nick Adams Stories,” a collection of short stories by Ernest Hemingway, many of which are set in northern Michigan.

Valerie Hemingway’s book, a memoir titled “Running with the Bulls: My Years with the Hemingways,” chronicles her years as Ernest Hemingway’s secretary and her later marriage to his son.

Along with Valerie Hemingway’s visit, a traveling exhibit titled “Up North with the Hemingways” will be on display at the Library of Michigan until May 5. The exhibit focuses on northern Michigan in the early 1900s, Ernest Hemingway and his family and “The Nick Adams Stories.”
