Hello, my name is Kaveri Korgavkar

In order to spread the word last year about the MSU Meditation Club, chemistry and comparative cultures and politics junior and club president Kaveri Korgavkar took matters into her own hands.

“I started practicing meditation and it completely changed my life,” she said. “When I came back in the fall, I was like, ‘I’m sure there are other people out there who want to learn and are wondering what meditation is and how you do it, and I figured I could try to put together some resources.”

Korgavkar put up fliers and said she was pleased when 15-20 members showed up for the first club meeting in the Union, and wanted to meet as often as twice a week.

Despite some ideas about meditation, the club does not require specific clothing, candles or any mystical connections.

“It’s just one form of relaxation,” she said. “It’s just a space where you’re not really thinking about anything.”

With as many as 150 people on the mailing list, the club holds free workshops and guided meditation sessions.

Korgavkar recommends meditation to anyone, not just stressed students.

“It just becomes a habit like brushing your teeth or taking a shower,” she said. “It becomes part of your lifestyle and makes stress in your life almost nonexistent.”
