Hello my name is Zach Parten

There’s no doubt in Zach Parten’s mind that the MSU dodgeball team gets some of its inspiration from “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.”

Parten, the team’s captain, said the 2004 movie definitely got more people interested in the game.

“(I like) the fact that it’s a little bit different,” the zoology senior said. “It’s not your usual sport.”

MSU’s dodgeball team, founded in 2003, has about 40 regular members, and Parten said the game is played similarly to the style in the movie. Each round starts with 15 players from each team facing each other and 10 balls in the middle, he said.

Parten said the sport involves a lot of communication among team members and choosing a specific target during the game.

“We play a lot better when we work together,” he said.

The team practices three times a week and will go to the national tournament April 12-13 where MSU will play against 12 other schools.

“You can go out, get rid of the frustration from school and beat the crap out of everybody else,” he said.
