When Jeremaya Martinez-Boyd left East Lansing to study abroad in the Dominican Republic in the summer of 2006, he didn’t think he would set a record.

Wow! Pretty nice curiculum!

Too bad David Ingold doesn’t know jack shit about geography… Puting Queretaro in Baja California kinda ruins the nice graphic. It defeats the purpose of showing a map if you make it so inacurate.

Ben- why do you get so worked up over him taking her name? Nothing wrong with them trying to correct a misogynistic tradition…

I agree with Ben. I am a female who got married in 02 and kept my own last name (going to change it now that I’m having a baby in October) But for a guy to adopt his wife’s last name just seems really wimpy. Like he’s a total puss. I just have a really hard time respecting that.

@ Ben and 200 grad – You have to consider that his wife lives in a country where lastnames of both spouses are hyphenized. There’s no more reasons for them to pick the US way over the Mexican way of adopting lastnames. It’s their decision, period.

The only strange thing about it is that he’s having her name before his own name.

Why are you guys so upset about him taking her name? I’m sure you all agree that women should take the man’s name, but why not the man take the woman’s? It’s a large part of both people’s identities and they are sharing it with one another. He obviously also has ties to Latin American culture from his studies, and he wants to share it with his wife. Why is that so wrong?

2000 grad, why are you okay with keeping your own name but not with a guy adopting a woman’s? It seems like you should support that. He’s not a wuss. He is a strong man who is secure enough with himself that he can adopt his wife’s name. I doubt many guys would be “ballsy” enough to do that.

FYI...He doesn’t come from a wealthy family. He had to work hard to pay for all the trips. Also, he’s not a wimp or a puss at all. He’s one of the realest and strongest people I’ve ever met. You have no idea what he went through before he came to MSU. He’s been through more as a young man than most people go through in their entire life.

Yes, he comes from a country where last names are hyphened. But, who cares if a man takes his wife’s last name? Does it make him less of a man? Why should a woman be expected to always change her identity.

Congrats! I think that him having traveled five times is impressive. I admire his strenght and his work ethic. Even thought he doesn’t come from a wealthy family he has managed to travel and learn other cultures and that is what we should look at more than why he changed his name. I truly admire him and he is an example to follow.

He is quoted as saying: “I adopted that name so she could share my name and I could share her name. That way, when we marry, our kids can have an American last name as well as a Hispanic surname.”

Dumb A$$! Martinez IS an AMERICAN name. Boyd is probably Irish or Scottish. It would appear that Study Abroad failed to fully educate this individual. Through the ignorance evident in his comment I would surmise that he is nothing more than a tourist rather than a true traveler.

I think it’s interesting that a so-called “Ph.D.” called someone a “Dumb A$$”... especially since Martinez IS a spanish name?! Aparently your PhD failed to educate YOU. There is no such thing as a true American name anyway.. idiot.

I am appalled at certain people’s reactions. Women take men’s names without question and when a man does it he gets hounded? I know Jeremaya personally and the last word I would use to describe him is “wimpy.” I think the fact that he has been able to go on so many trips confirms that completely. It takes a strong person to not get discouraged by financial setbacks and still achieve what he or she wants to do. I think the world would be a much better place if as many people were as dedicated to learning about other cultures and traveling as Jeremaya is.

Definition: A patronymic surname meanign “son of Martin.” Martin is from the Latin “Martinus,” a derivitive of “Mars,” the Roman god of fertility and war.

	Surname Origin: Spanish

	Alternate Surname Spellings: MARTINS, MARTINSON

Hmm, maybe this supposed PhD should check their facts, a simple two second search on google yielded the above results.

	http://genealogy.about.com/library/surnames/m/bl_name-MARTINEZ.htm

Also, there is no such thing as an American name, we’re a nation of immigrants, thus we have surnames from different countries.
