Improv groups travel to MSU for show

April 10, 2008

MSU’s student comedic improvisation group, Your Mom Improv, and the University Activities Board, or UAB, are teaming up to present an evening of comic relief at 9 p.m. Saturday in the International Center.

The two groups will host visiting student improv groups from Case Western Reserve University, Ohio State University, University of Michigan, Northwestern University, Eastern Michigan University, Purdue University and two teams from Central Michigan University.

Groups will perform improvisation, stand-up comedy and sketch comedy. Games will include suggestions and involvement from the audience.

“Students can benefit more from seeing their peers do (improv),” said Kari Ryan, vice president of Your Mom Improv and a film studies and advertising junior. “A lot of groups are really established, especially Northwestern, which has been around more than 30 years.”

Each school’s group will have about 30-40 minutes to perform on stage. Because Your Mom Improv is hosting the event, the group might perform a game or two between sets. For the most part, the focus will be on the visiting groups.

“It’s guaranteed to be funny, most groups have tons of experience,” said communication junior Sarah Shockey, a member of Your Mom Improv. “It’s like seeing a professional comedy show with people before they get famous.”

Students can get tickets in 322 Union. Tickets are free, and there’s a two-ticket limit per ID.
