Lerg takes home team MVP honor

Junior forward Justin Abdelkader and freshman defenseman Jeff Petry were the big winners at the MSU hockey team’s banquet Tuesday, as both took home two awards.

Abdelkader won the Spartan Fitness and Amo Bessone awards while Petry was named as the Dr. John Downs Outstanding Defensive Player and Outstanding Rookie.

Junior goaltender Jeff Lerg was named Most Valuable Player for the second straight season. Lerg was named second-team All-America and a Hobey Baker finalist.

Junior forward Tim Kennedy was named as the Outstanding Offensive Player while senior captain Bryan Lerg took home the Bill Burgess Outstanding Senior Award.

Defenseman Jeff Dunne won the Blue Line President’s Award, given to the top scholar-athlete in the senior class while fellow senior forward Zak McClellan picked up the team’s Goofus Award for the fourth-straight season.

Rounding out the awards was sophomore defenseman Justin Johnston, who was named Most Improved Player.
