Greeks' charity deserves more coverage than Cedar Fest riot
As I opened The State News on Monday morning, looking forward to reading articles on the accomplishments of the MSU greek community in the past week, I was absolutely disgusted when I did not find 1 inch of information about it.
Instead of broadcasting an unprecedented accomplishment for the greek community and MSU as a whole, The State News pored over Cedar Fest. Sure, Cedar Fest was a very significant event that took place last weekend, but so was the finale of Greek Week 2008. The MSU greek community raised more than $208,000 to support the American Cancer Society and local charities. What an accomplishment!
As I stated earlier, it actually is an unprecedented accomplishment. The State News solely looked to portray the negative incidences that took place near our campus this past weekend, while there were more than 2,500 students constantly working all week to raise money to fight cancer. Maybe if The State News would look at the positive aspects of MSU and the greek community, things like Cedar Fest would not even take place. Our campus is far better than what The State News makes it out to be. Next time when a feat this spectacular is achieved, let the rest of campus know there is more to a Spartan than just tailgates and teargassed street parties.

i was in greek week. it’s all a bunch of stat whoring.
but the letter kinda has a point.

no one cares

OK, I will be the first to start.
No one cares about Greeks and their so- called accomplishments besides other Greeks.
Also, I wonder how many Greeks were at Cedar Fest causing most of the issues (the ones started by MSU students of course) the State News was forced to cover.
I care

I dont read “Greek Week” as I could usually not care less about what Greeks are doing, but accomplishments such as these should be highlighted. The larger message in the letter is important as well. Let’s try to highlight the positives here at MSU. Great letter. Thanks!
I care too.

Chances are someone you know will be diagnosed with cancer. $200k will go a long way toward helping those who need it most.

i don’t think college kids raising over $200K for cancer research should be called a “so-called accomplishment” by anyone.
as for your insinuation that fraternity & sorority members were the main cause of the ‘riot’: greeks are a fairly small percentage of the student body, and several houses had one-on-ones or two-on-ones that night. so i doubt that they were causing “most of the issues”

Did you just blame Cedar Fest on the State News? That’s rich!
Greek who?

and ruffie- laden drinks, and exclusive wrist band entry only parties, and keg stands, and date parties, and serenade, and steroids, and uggs, and abercrombie, and beer pong, and freshman- fishing…

CedarFest was now almost a week ago, can we change subjects yet?

Although I am a GDI, I have to agree with this person. Seems like the State News and other well known media outlets (Today Show anyone?) take a story and try to stretch and twist it and bore me to death. Rather than focus on more worthwhile stories, they interview anyone concievably relevant to the story even it they have nothing to add. Did your second cousin once know a guy that was in the building at Virginia Tech two hours before the shooting? Well, hell, let’s interview him. Press release states that some nameless people were arrested at Cedar Fest. Let’s spend four pages on it. No doubt that most of these stories are tragic and should be remembered, just beating them to death is a waste of everyone’s time. Drives me nuts…
COME ON

Great letter! I agree 100% that the media should focus more on the good than the bad! And everyone making a negative comment about Greeks….we were not out there helping them raise money! I didnt even really know it was going on so yes they may sit there and live in their own world but we live in ours too and any MSU GDI that has been affected by cancer will be proud to know that MSU Greeks raised that kind of money!
commee onnnn

They should’ve donated to herpes research instead out of self interest.
agreed

i sincerely agree with this opinion. over 200,000 was raised for the american cancer society alone, and that isn’t even mentioning the money raised for other numerous charities including make a wish foundation. those who don’t like greeks, so be it, we can’t change your stereotypes of us, but not every greek person is your stereotype..there are stuck up people, shallow people, pretty people, ugly people, jerks, and all around nice people everywhere on campus, in houses and not in houses…why focus on stereotyping greeks rather than looking to yourself and applauding them for working toward an amazing cause. everyone needs to step back and realize whether you like the greek community at msu or not, they just achieved something great that deserves recognition!

great accomplishments shouldn’t need recognition. if you want a gold star for doing something good everytime you do it, then go back to kindergarten.
hah.

hey Greeks, your daddy and mommy’s money doesn’t count. so how much did you REALLY raise?

So while the Greek Community was busy raising money, other students thought it would be a good idea to riot. Funny, the State News didn’t mention Greeks in their coverage of the riots either…
