Plastic hard hats undermine group's environmental concerns
As a student concerned about the environment, I couldn’t help but notice that in the photo for the article Students rally for energy efficiency (SN 4/18) the supporters wore green hard hats. That seems like an oxymoron to me — they want better efficiency, but they supported the making of green plastic hats? Did they not realize how much energy is put into making something so trivial? If people want clean energy, they have to start noticing the things they do that seem harmless are actually bad for the environment, and not purchase or support the purchase of things that are against their cause.

Troy, sometimes safety has to come first. Hard hats saves lives.
Really?

“Hard hats saves lives.”
Yup. Lots of falling debris on the steps of the Capitol. Always hilarious to see people clamoring for environmental change while supporting its destruction.
Props on a nice catch, Troy.
Well, isn't it obvious

They need the hard hats to protect their heads from the brain sucker that seems to hang out above the capitol.

Sometimes doing things that cost energy will save energy in the end. This is the same kind of grief Al Gore gets for riding around the country promoting environmental awareness from the conservatives.
Al Gore does not care about the environment, he rides around in a jet all day! These are all fubar distractions.

The first step of being “green” is telling everyone how “green” you are.
Looking for a reason to undermine?

Hey,“Looking for a reason to undermine?”
Did you read my comment? There is no real irony, only situational irony. And you fail to address the fact that not having those hats would have been better than having them.
So, is it ironic to point out the failures of one side while trumpeting the benefits one the other? NO! Please undertand irony.

Since the Michigan Student Sustainability Coalition is a a decentralized, consensus based organization of students and youth from the entire state of Michigan striving for a triple bottom line of ecological integrity, economic prosperity and social justice for all people, the author of this letter is welcome to contribute to future decisions the MSSC makes.
I think the author raises a good point about the purchasing of the hard hats, and I can take them blame as I purchased the hard hats with campaign funding we worked hard to raise. However, if the author would have attended the event, he would have noticed that we also set up car-pools for out of town students and the majority of MSU students took the CATA #1 to the event. We catered the event with local, organic food from Green River Cafe in East Lansing. We supported local churches by renting space to hold training sessions. We used recycled paper from Kinko’s for out lobby packets. One person came to the event in a biodiesel powered 1983 Mercedes.
The author also should understand that this organization is entirely youth run and funded! We are not the Sierra Club or a large non-profit or corporation with a lot of resources. We have a very limited budget, that we have raised ourselves.
If you are interested in supporting our work and making sure that something as terrible as purchasing green hard hats doesn’t happen again, why don’t you consider talking with our group, instead of calling us out through the State News? Here is an environmental algorithm that you should test Troy, since you are a specialist at this “catching” thing. How much ink was wasted to print your pointless and arrogant opinion article. I don’t know for sure, but what I am sure of is that the State News could have used it to write something about….I don’t know…. rise in world food prices, the Prosperity Partnership of North America talks, balloons, peaches….anything else really. Get off your intellectual high horse, stand for a cause and do something.

Yes, yes, whine whine whine. You just consumed a crapload of electricity using your computer while calling out Troy for his use of paper. You follow this up with a remark about his arrogance while writing a hate-filled and arrogant article yourself. Your hypocracy seems unlimited. At least the paper was probably recycled.
Maybe you should have biked over to his residence and delivered your review instead? Instead you blast him for being an intellectual – commonplace today when we frown upon ANYONE questioning the status quo.

Do people not realize that the electricity to run the SN server (and the servers of all of its advertisers) uses more power than the actual printing and distribution of this newspaper? That may not be true for larger entities such as the Free Press, the Times, the Tribune, or the Post, but it is true here. {this is not meant to be a commenary against traditional news media} So, “Nice catch Troy,” stop being a hypocrite. [and before someone calls me a hypocrite, I’d just like to point out that I am not claiming to be environmentally friendly].
