President Simon issues Cedar Fest statement on blog

MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon released a statement on her blog Monday in response to the riot during Cedar Fest this weekend.

Simon addressed the effect the riot had on MSU’s image, as well as steps MSU officials are taking to review the cases of those arrested and those who may be arrested in the future after video and Facebook.com evidence is reviewed.

Some highlights include:

“Although it is clear that the vast majority of Michigan State University students did not participate in the disturbances at Cedar Village on Saturday night, the events harm the collective image of MSU and the city of East Lansing.”

“Both East Lansing and MSU began debriefing yesterday regarding the incident, as well as future action. These dialogues will continue. Specifically, a meeting was held this morning to review the arrests and tickets that were issued, as well as to begin the process of using technology to identify others who may be arrested subsequently.”

“The reckless behavior of the individuals who set in motion and who participated in the unlawful activity that occurred at ‘Cedar Fest’ will have consequences. There are no casual observers once a notice is given by police to disperse. Those who chose to stay after such announcements were made became participants in the violence, whether they threw a bottle or filmed the action on their cell phones. MSU and the city of East Lansing will pursue aggressive and fair implementation of university policies and state statutes.”

Punish them, especially if they are caught doing bad stuff. Then add a bit extra in the realm of punishment if they are not Spartans, or residents of EL.

Proud Alum

Seriously, just expell all of them. This is not like 2005, a celebration that went horribly wrong, or even buring couches on Munn. These kids went there specifically to start a disturbance and should receive a swift and painful punishment. There is video of some people actually chanting for a riot. Idiots.

“There are no casual observers once a notice is given by police to disperse. “

Wait a minute… why not? Assuming that someone simply nearby is associated with violence, chaos, or the like is an outlandish and police state mentality. Now that’s not to say someone who is disobeying an order from police to disperse an unethical gathering, riot, civil disturbance, or the like is doing the right thing; I just think this type of mindset further worsens the symptoms of events like these rather than helps them to go away. From an MSU Grad who witnessed first-hand the riots in 2005, and someone who is still very much part of the MSU community.

Steve
04/07/08 @ 6:40pm

When the police tell you to disperse, sticking around is not unethical. It is illegal. You are committing a crime just by standing there.

Integral part of MSU – It’s the stupid mentality of people like you that allow this shit to continue to occur.

definitely expell them or divide all damage cost and issue the tickets for those divided amounts to each one of those arrested. This will be harsh enough for them to stop acting like morons. Those riot videos just reached CNN, which means every single person who is watching CNN is going to think crap stuff about MSU. And CNN is shown worldwide. STOP ACTING LIKE LITTLE CHILDREN, BE MATURE. THANKS FOR DESTROYING MSU REPUTATION ONCE AGAIN.

It’s so unfortunate that only a small fraction of real MSU students have caused such a horrible stain on the reputation of Michigan State. I am frustrated and embarrassed by these actions and hope the individuals involved get the highest possible punishment for their actions.

04/07/08 @ 7:46pm

I am absolutely disgusted by the actions of my fellow students. I have friends from Florida calling me asking me “what kind of school are you going to that riots?” ....how embarassing. MSU admin had to have known this was going to happen, shame on them for not stopping it in the first place. I talked to students who said they were “trying to get tear-gased” as if it was “cool” what deuchebags.
All of these students need to be expelled, make an example out of them. Thanks again MSU for de-valuing the degree I’m working so hard to get. Shame on all of you.

I really hate telling people that I graduated from Michigan State. How does MSU end up with such a despicable student body? Riots have been occurring annually since 1999. Throngs of idol, mindless, drunk kids with no conscience or respect burning couches and flipping cars for no particular reason at all. Future leaders of the world, brought to you by MSU-creating violence and destruction for no reason at all.

And to the Proud Alum… a celebration that went horribly wrong? I don’t think so. Same old song and dance if you ask me. Every single participant of any MSU riot/party is careless and selfish. I can’t stand the fact that I ever had any association with that University.

Carl
04/07/08 @ 8:09pm

The riots were unfortunate, but let’s not get carried away about how it will harm MSU’s “reputation”: this isn’t Harvard we’re talking about. MSU’s national rep – to whatever extent it even has one – is that it’s an enormous, second-tier public university where generally reliable if mostly mediocre middle-class students go to party, attend lecture classes and football games, graduate, and begin the long march of their lives as workers, taxpayers, and school board members. A few 3-second CNN clips of MSU frat boys gagging on tear gas isn’t going to budge that rep one or way or the other. And that’s a good thing.

Last time MSU and E Lansing let the rioters walk away with a slap on the hands. MSU reputation is ruined by this childish BS, in fact,
They should throw the book at the rioters. MSU and E. Lans. knew this was coming and should have been tough…instead they stood around and watched until it go bad. Should have cracked heads and taken em all in. Didnt want to offend….it offends me a lansing resident and big time contributer to Mooo U. I blame the crooks who run the city of East Lansing for maintaining a poor relationship with the campus and its students, and the absolutely unprofessional ELPD. Why is it that students at the University of North Carolina can have controlled “riots”/parties with fires in the middle of the streets of Chapel Hill, and the police just supervise to make no one gets hurt? Why in East Lansing is there the antagonism between students, the community, and the police? The police in EL have tarnished their badges too many times. If anything, they encourage and egg students into “riots” so that they can have open season on students. The distrust/general distrust of the PD coupled with the riot created a certain expectation of behavior for the students.

I will never send my kids to my alma mater. And the week after graduation I will be out of this hell hole and never looking back. Nice work city leaders!

Sad thing about this whole relationship w/ MSU and EL and the student “off campus” community is about two years ago a woman from Utah was specifically hired by MSU to bring the MSU, EL and student communities together to deal w/ and encourage positive behavior, i.e. not this action guess I’m glad I didn’t get that job, bet she has quite a headache to deal with today

Yo
04/07/08 @ 9:42pm

how is it a riot if nobody gets seriously injured and there is very minimal property damage? does two kids starting fires in dumpsters make a party a riot? of course those kids shouldn’t have been throwing beer bottles at cops, but that is all that happened (besides things you see at every party, with a few more topless girls). it was a PARTY, not a riot! there are always a few assholes at a party that take everything to the next level, and in such a big group there are enough to make the whole country think that the best party EL has seen in a decade was a violent riot. Thousands of students will tell you they had more fun and felt more like a Spartan than on any other night since they moved to EL.

03 student
04/07/08 @ 9:53pm

So is this to say that they are actively looking for anyone who was there, or just those who were causing trouble? I hate to use the whole “a couple of bad apples” addage, but most of the people there were not throwing bottles or bricks, or any of that. Those people who were throwing things should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

And to those who say that the warning was not heeded: I was on the north end of the group, looking over the crowd about the time they supposedly made the announcement, but did not hear anything. Maybe next time they should put up more speakers or something.

Chris
04/07/08 @ 9:58pm

Yo is right, East Lansing has improved a lot since the CedarFests of the 1980s. Back then there was a hell of a lot more violence, property damage, arrests, and less people. MSU pulled off the biggest party in the history of the school with less law-breaking than any of the previous mega-parties in the school’s history. Good job Spartans! You’re getting way better at partying safely. No one should blame the city or the school for having shitheads in their town, every city in the world has a few.

Anom
04/07/08 @ 10:31pm

So they expect 4,000 people to hear them telling people to disburse when they were announcing it way by Bogue Street? (At least that is what the videos on youtube and CNN looked like.) And what about the residents of Cedar Village who were in their own rooms partying? Or the friends of the residents whom were inside and only went outside to leave the premises?

SteveL
04/07/08 @ 10:34pm

First of all, how does something like this even get sanctioned? Isn’t permits needed to have this type of gathering? Second. This is a glaring reason why this area should be redeveloped as plans call for. A more upscale mix of owners, businesses, commercial will help to clean up what has become a focal point for undesirable persons and mayhem. As an alumus I was shocked to pick up my paper and to turn on CNN and see a bad image of MSU being shown. Any students arrested and are guilty of a charge no matter how small should be expelled, period.

not a riot
04/07/08 @ 10:35pm

It was just a raging party up until the STOP sign starting waving back and forth. Then the cops decided to push through the group of people and force everyone to leave…no one cared…tear gas…youtube…CNN...

party not riot
04/07/08 @ 10:42pm

this won’t hurt the reputation of MSU, it’ll just make a funny opening line at a job interview at best, something like “Oh you went to Michigan State? I hear it’s a riot up there” and then the MSU grad and potential employer will share a laugh and start out on good terms.

Chris
04/07/08 @ 11:45pm

This is a case of kids deliberately creating an event to break the rules knowing it would get out of hand and anticipating a showdown with the police. Some serious punishments need to be dealt, and I’m glad the University is wise enough to use Facebook as an instrument to find those involved.

GET THEM OUT OF THE UNIVERSITY. GET THOSE STUDENTS OUT OF MSU. THROW THEM OUT. WE ARE HERE TO STUDY AND DEVELOP ACADEMICALLY, NOT TO JOKE AROUND.

Message to "a to the c"
04/08/08 @ 1:14am

“a to the c”, right now I can honestly say I am disgusted and embarrassed you ever set foot in East Lansing. You take the actions of a small percentage of the MSU student population and use it as justification to label the entire student body as being “despicable?” Nice job on making a sweeping generalization and offending over 40,000 students, myself included. Your “embarrassment” of attending MSU tells me that you never shared any great experiences with anyone during your stay in East Lansing. You are not, never were, and will never be a Spartan. Do us a favor and never tell anyone you graduated from Michigan State University again, you disgust me.

As for the riots, I agree that the people involved in violent, criminal actions should be penalized to the fullest. There is no excuse for throwing glass bottles at anyone, ever; just like there is no excuse for ripping stop signs out of the ground. I saw some poor girl bleeding from the head on Grand River as a result of some drunk asshole heaving a glass bottle into a crowd of people and was more than a little outraged that someone would do that. I know that many of the offenders weren’t MSU students, but c’mon Spartans…use a little more discretion when choosing who to invite to parties.

Unfortunately, as usual, the media and any other outsiders that weren’t there have made this disaster out to be something other than what it really was. There were NOT 4,000 rioters tearing shit up and throwing bricks at cops. That is NOT what the situation looked like. There were probably 3,800 party-goers crammed in the Cedar Village area with roughly 200 troublemakers that may have actually posed any real threat to the police force. It is very unfortunate that things are being portrayed as an out-of-control, riotous, and dangerous situation.

Hold your heads high Spartans. Don’t let the idiotic actions of a select few make you think any less of the caliber of your own being and of your fellow classmates. Show some class for your school. Go Green!

These recurring acts of pointless civil disobedience by MSU students in recent years are more anecdotal evidence illustrating that adolescence does not wind down until people are in their mid-late 20s. There must be at least dozen large-scale social injustices in the world you can riot or protest against, but you chose this useless narcissistic grab for attention from the MSU Administration and media. Sorry to break the news to the punks who instigated and perpetuated the conflagration, but educated adults who truly care about their friends and community do not “party” like this. Despite the propaganda you deluded yourself into believing during high school, college is primarily about learning to become a better human and productive, critically thinking member of society. It is not about acting like over-caffeinated hooligans and thugs.

I commend the approx 36k Spartans that didnt show up for the so called embarassing party. What did E Lans and MSU expect, my how stupid..if MSU had a coordinator, she should be FIRED immediately.
Didnt earn her money. Both the city and the school caved on any action
during and after the last messes. And this was the result. Time for tough punishment…but it wont happen like the last times. MSU sent a message and the rioters won. More to come get used to it.
To the parents whose kids attended…Arent you proud to have sacrificed all your life to see your kids piss it away. Tough Love time. But it wont happen, just open a bottle of beer and say you made me proud, now make me prouder earn your own college degree with your own money. Be a real Spartan like the 36K that didnt binge.
Get a Job or Join the military…my support has ended. And either come home with your shield or come home on it. Then go out and buy that Caddie youve always wanted but couldnt afford cause you were putting away every cent for your drunken kids education and enjoy.
GM could use your money.

For those real Spartans that didnt binge…Im proud of you.
and embarassed…cause its going to be harder for you to get a job in the future. No one really wants to employ drunks..unless you have an
insider pulling for you, it really screws up your employment possibilities with your MSU degree. Thats the truth, no matter what
MSU says…they want your money and to keep you enrolled. And to recruit more. The lack of strong enforcement for the last three riots has telegraphed to the world and the business community that we are all drunken, brain dead idiots. And most Spartans arent. My three gradkids are going to Hillsdale, unless that great school changes…..then it will be William and Mary. Why do i know that, cause if they want a free ride on my money, thats where they are going.

Agree with PUNISHMENT. But like the last times it wont happen. Look at the ones they so called arrested…the low bail, the slap on the hands…same o same o. Hit em hard…and publish the names and say goodby to em. Surely the State News can show the names and faces and penalties. The State Urnal will hide it as usual. But thats why most folks read the State News instead. Also bill those who were caught for all the costs, clean up and police costs and damages. devide it up and make sure that the proper leins are placed on the non payers. If done right…and MSU doesnt do it right, all tax returns would go for paying back the damages till they are paid off.

the pathetic thing is e Lansing, MSU, and many more knew it was coming and rolled over and let it happen.

Dont you think its pathetic, that so many law enforcement folks.
One of the best law enforcement schools, Hq to the State Police,
Big Campus Police(Campus police have quadtripled since i went to MSU),
and large E Lansing and Lansing police, plus supporting counties could
let this get out of hand, even with advance notice. And they did have that and many previous riots.

WATCH the enforcement….cause the city and university will woose out
and it will be Party on again.

Some of the student’s arrested were not present when the so called riot took place. They were leaving the area and made a stupid mistake of picking up a sign, found between two houses. It had not been torn down it was laying on the ground with dead grass around it. But because they had the sign they were arrested. Not drunk, just poor judgement. We understand why they were arrested, but to be kicked out of school for this? Not rioting, no intention of rioting, just curious and stupid judgement.
Please look at every case carefully. All student’s arrested were not involved in the rioting and throwing bottles at police officers or wanting to be tear gas. As a parent I went down to the area and saw student’s just being student and this was at 1:00am. I was once a student and understand they need to blow off stress of school. We expect the young adults to behave like adults, they are young adults learning about life for the first time without helicoper parenting around. Most of these student have never had any independence and do not know how to handle life without parents telling what to do and controling everything they do. I remember going to orientation for parents and students, the topic of helicoper parent was mentioned more then once. The students are at MSU are there to learn about life and they will always make mistakes along the way in the classroom and out of the classroom. MSU offers a great education!!!! Please continue to let our student’s learn. Making poor judgement calls, not a reason to be thrown out of school. People in general are not perfect and make mistakes! I am very proud of all the Michigan State Student’s!!!! Each lesson learned will help them be the best they can be. Life is learning!

One, why does this surprise anyone? Spartans are classless people, otherwise they wouldn’t be Spartans. Before you ask, I’m an MSU student, but not a Spartan. I have too much class and common sense for that. On a different note, it’s ridiculous that police have the authority to make citizens leave a public place with an order. The individuals who weren’t committing another crime should have been allowed to stay and the cops should not have the legal ability to make them leave.

Deb as well as her kid shouldnt have been there period.

This will be the laim excuse they all use and have used in the last three riots. OTTA SCHOOL and OTTA STATE and no riots.
The students acted like spoiled brats with no religious or moral background. Any drunks that were underage should also be put away till they explain who got the booze and provided it to them.

It’s simple – If you were there you should be punished to the full extent of the law including expulsion and jail time. It you support it, you were probably there. There really is no place in the “University Experience” for this type of activity – if you believe there is, you should not be going to this university.

Michigan State already is working very hard to repair a tarnished image. Why would any serious Spartan want to contribute to the damage?

It profoundly sad that a student of MSU or anybody on this blog would support the type of activity that helps to corrode the ailing image of MSU. We current and former students have a tremendous investment in this great institution. The current students will learn that the damage done in a day must be lived with for a lifetime.

Here We Go Again...
04/08/08 @ 12:44pm

I was at MSU from 85-89 and CedarFest was in full swing back in those days. The students raged as hard as ever, beer kegs on every porch and balcony in Cedar Village. Hot, half naked co-eds danced around passing out drunken kisses to passers by, and students flocked to the Village to drink and party and have fun. CedarFest was the best party on any college campus anywhere. Then, right around 87 or 88 the DPS and the ELPD decided that a bunch of students getting drunk and showing off their breasts was a major problem so they sent in cops on horseback and cops in riot gear, and marched down Cedar Street like Nazi Stormtroopers. The students, who were as drunk they could possibly be fought back the heavy handed tactics of the authorities and the CedarFest as a Riot was born. Do you honestly believe the students would have done a bunch of property damage and incited a riot against each other without the paramilitary presence of the cops? You are mistaken if you think that only the students are responsible for these events. The DPS and ELPD have absolutely no respect for MSU students and they treat them like they are criminals at every turn. Does that excuse the behavior of the students last weekend? Of course not but I am here to tell you that without the heavy handed tactics of the authorities, CedarFest would not be on CNN.

Just an Opinion
04/08/08 @ 12:59pm

To Holland and a few others,

First of all, religious background should have absolutely nothing to do with who gets admitted to a public univiersity. Second, for someone so concerned with law and property you sure seem ready to scrap the Constitution by locking kids up indefinitely and without trial. Finally, let’s all ignore the great things MSU has done and relinquish our association because of the actions of a few idiots. Is this a problem? Absolutely. I however, am still proud of the many, world class academic programs at MSU, the fact that we have the biggest and most developed study abroad program in the nation. I’m even proud that our band guards the Sparty statue before the U of M game each year. While I am disappointed in how this incident has reflected on MSU, MSU is bigger than this on occurrence. If you do not think so, fine. But there are plenty of us who will still be wearing green and white.

Get Over It
04/08/08 @ 1:24pm

It’s done with. There was hardly any damage compared to past “riots.” Only 28 Spartans were arrested out of, what, 40,000 undergrads. 5% of the student body showed up. Everything was fine until cops started threatening to teargas people at around 11pm, well before anything got out of hand. I’d say that isn’t too serious.

Stop making this more than it is. If you were there you should get arrested? What an IMMATURE comment. So observing a crime is the same as taking part in it? Since when?

Stupid logic all over this website, you are all a bunch of tools with stubborn, one-sided opinions. You should all be politicians.

Get Over It
04/08/08 @ 1:31pm

Oh, and what is with all this “future leaders of the world causing such disturbances” bullshit? It seems like you anal nobodys never left your couch cushion and had a good time. We aren’t doing blow like Obama or toking reefer like Bush…

I’m with “Yo”...it was one of the top 5 nights I have had at MSU over the past 3 years. It was a hell of a good time and I left before teargas was even threatened.

College is the time of many people’s lives. Stop subjugating 95% of the student body for acts of violence perpetrated by non-MSU students in the first place. If you bastards were all there at 7pm you would have seen how friendly an atmosphere it was…people throwing the football around, people grilling on their patios, the fight song being played on a trumpet off a balcony. It was great and I would do it all again.

Get those that have already been caught and start waterboarding them NOW. Get a list by any means necessary from each student until the ring expands to include all 4,000 kids. Once they are all identified, arrested, jailed and beaten into total submission to the system then and only then can the MSU and EL relax. There is no time waste on constitutional constraints, they’re only students. Keep the heat on or the terrorist win and we lose out precious freedoms.

are definitely one of them. No excuse.

Was there funding short-fall in the Creative Arts this year? Do these children have no sense of originality? This has been done. Their work is boring. Imangine if all Andy Warhol did was paint soup cans. There is no talent in getting drunk and taking a swing at a cop. The children just want to re-live what we already did, which was somewhat revolutionary, in the late nineties and early 2000. If they want to recreate history, they should look into sanctioned re-enactments, which are quite popular among people who appreciate their heritage not just imitate it. A re-creation of “The Battle of Munn Field” would do more to bring the community together anyhow. All in good fun.

Get Real.

I highly doubt MSU will look back and expel everyone who did something wrong. Do you realize how much money the university would be losing? Quit being so damn uptight. Nobody even cares about it anymore. It wasn’t a riot. The ELPD got bored and wanted to make something happen. They provoked it. Take the cops away and nothing would have happened.

Why so long?

Rumors of this Cedar Fest began mid-day Saturday. Nothing from the administration for 48 hours?

WTF?

Holland — donate your money to Hillsdale College. Could not be any worse.

You all could dwell on the irresponsible behavior as a select few, and consequently let it ruin your opinion of a great university. Or you could visit http://www.msu.edu/thisismsu/points_pride.html and be reminded of why you should be proud to be a spartan. Enough of this playing-along-with-the-media bullshit, this disaster is not what should come to mind when you think of your school. My god you make it sound like the opinions of others matter to you more than your own personal opinion. Grow a spine and stick up for your university. Focus on the good, not the bad.

This does not effect anyone other than those who attended the party. MSU did not condone the party. So tell me how this hurts the campus? Everyone knows this “stuff” happens at every college, its just at MSU we do it better. If u think this hurts your image because you go to MSU and we throw partys, easy answer. LEAVE

Alum are affected by the actions of current students too. Alum can’t just leave MSU, we already have degress. I am proud of my degree from MSU; I would like it to continue to be of high worth, not somewhat tarnished by the actions of a few idiots. If you think people in the real world don’t look down upon MSU because of this, then you’ve lived a pretty sheltered life.
The people who should leave are the rioters who hurt the image of MSU and of the students who actually care about the university. That’s why some are being suspended. Hopefully more are.
