I enjoyed reading all your Spartan sports memories, but I’m really surprised no one included last year’s national championship in hockey eh.

There are so many great MSU moments, but you all captured some of the best ones. I’d add in the MSU hockey championship, personally. Zeke the Wonderdog in action is also a big highlight moment for me. Go Green. Go White.

Let’s recap—of your 8 memories, 2 involved losses (UM and UNC—but I guess you had a lot to choose from), 1 didn’t even involve your school (UM vs. App State), 1 involved a win over a team that went 0-2 against the service academies (ND), and you put your hockey national championship as the last one, almost as if it was an afterthought.

It’s been a pretty bleak four years (or five, probably in your case) for you guys.

Wow, only one mention of the hockey championship??? Seriously, that has to rate more highly than 1) a fumble return in a football game we lost; 2) the first half of a basketball game we lost; and 3) a football game that our team didn’t even play in. I am all about beating Notre Dame, though.

This: “When Appalachian State blocked the final U-M field-goal attempt to seal the victory, the whole bar erupted into cheers and high-fives. I think we even sang the MSU fight song” ... is the most pathetic thing I have read in my life.

You had an excellent basketball team, a hockey national championship, and yet your #2 memory happened because you temporarily outsourced your support to a team that did what MSU couldn’t in six tries.

You’d think with how obsessed you are with that game, you’d at least know what the damn score was. This is res ipsa loquitur as to your Little Brother status. Bow down.

So your best memories include Michigan defeating you in your own stadium, keeping bowl hopes alive that eventually died, beating a terrible Notre Dame team that didn’t even belong on a football field that season, and beating your in-state rival in a regular season hockey game. Tell this to prospective undergrads and I’m sure they’ll be dying to see Spartan athletics.

What your favorite memories in the last four years should be:

	1. Losing to Notre Dame at home, at night, in hurricane weather after a commanding halftime lead.
2. Losing to Michigan at Crisler Arena in back-to-back seasons.
3. Izzo not winning a single Big Ten championship.
4. Not even qualifying for the semifinals of the CCHA tournament this season after winning an undeserved national title.
5. Melting down at home this past season to the team that lost to Appalachian State.
6. Braylon Edwards dominating you in 2004. Do I even have to mention the meltdown from that game?
7. John L. Smith
8. Amadou Ba knocking a drunk Izzone kid to the floor.
9. Your men’s basketball team having less Big Ten road victories than a Michigan team who hasn’t made it to the NCAA tournament in over a decade.
10. Michigan State football and all of the characters that are part of it.

If you’re going to add the Appalachian State game, at least get your facts straight. The final score was NOT 42-34. As you wrote, Appalachan State blocked a Michigan field goal that would have won the game. By your account of the score, a successful field goal would not have won the game, but rather made it 42-37. The final score was 34-32. And on November 3, 2007 the final score was 28-24.

#1 Why is an App State vs UofM game an MSU sports memory?

#2 Why is this “MSU sports memory” not remember the correct score?

It is kind of embarrassing for MSU that this is a MSU sports memory.

To reiterate, the score of the MIchigan-App. State game was 34-32 not 42-34. It’s probably best to put down the correct score.

As a Michigan basketball fan, I can understand being bitter — but, seriously, MSU has had a lot of success in basketball and hockey in the last few years. The App State is not a MSU memory, and to include that in this article is ridiculous.

I’m not as critical of the 1st half of the NC game reference, since it was the final four and the Tar Heels were great that year.

You are reinforced your community college status and little brother persona by failing to at least get your facts straight when making fun of Michigan. This is truly sad. Also, how can your best memory be in a game you lost?

Don’t you guys remember losing to Grand Valley State in basketball. Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t they a DIVISION II school? Exactly!

Don’t say it was an exhibition and MSU didn’t take it seriously. That loss left MSU basketball players without a locker room for a while.

If Izzo knew any better he would leave MSU the minute some other school offers him.

It was an exhibition. As stupid as the App State references are, the UM idiots comparing it to a game that didn’t count are even dumber.

I don’t get the little brother references. In the past decade:
MSU basketball – national championship
MSU hockey – national championship
MSU football – Citrus Bowl win, not much else
UM basketball – NIT “national championship”, #65 ranking
UM hockey – no national championships
UM football – getting killed in BCS games, no national championships

Congrats on having a better football team, but UM is the little brother in the other major sports. The number of UM posts above confirm the little brother mentality.

Well, “AJ=dumb,” the references come from Mike Hart, who rushed for 680 yards in his 4 consecutive victories over MSU. He had this to say after Michigan’s 6th straight defeat of MSU this year:

“Sometimes it’s just like when you’re playing your little brother in basketball,” Hart said. “You let him get a lead and let him get excited, but then you take it back from him.”

Hart then was asked if he regarded the Spartans as Michigan’s subservient sibling?

	“Yes I do,” he said.

It wouldn’t have been applicable here had the State News staff chosen to wax nostalgic on positive memories of Michigan State sports teams’ victories.

However, the list highlights an inferiority complex, speaking for itself re:‘little brother.’ For example, relishing in a Michigan defeat rather than accomplishments that MSU had anything to do with, or celebrating the worst play in college football history (admittedly a tremendous run on his part, but ultimately in vain) in the midst of a devastating loss.
