In order to spread awareness on energy efficiency, clean energy and global warming, Clean Water Action is hosting a Lights Out Party Thursday that will be run completely without the use of electricity.
The party, which begins at 6 p.m. at 1200 Michigan Ave. Suite A, is open to all area residents looking to gain information on ways to be more energy efficient and learn about possible energy alternatives.
Candles and natural light will provide illumination for the party, which will also feature discussions on global warming and provide environmentally friendly advice.
“Right now is a crucial time in Michigan,” said Melissa Anderson, a political theory and constitutional democracy senior and intern at Clean Water Action.
She said people can continue turning to coal as an energy source, or they can decide to work together on finding something that could be better for the environment.
“By finding an energy alternative we can basically improve all aspects of life,” she said.
Currently, a proposal to build eight new coal plants in the state is something, Michael Stevenson, a political science junior and public policy intern at Clean Water Action, said must be stopped before it is too late.
“I hope we can inform as many people as possible at the party through education about the harmful effects coal plants have on our environment,” Stevenson said. “If you can teach one person, that can reach 100.”
The gathering will offer educational information, have experts on site to answer questions, provide food and drinks to all those who attend and have a T-shirt making available.
No prior registration is needed to attend, but Stevenson said he is asking people to turn off their lights and electronics at home, and ride a bike or carpool with friends to the event.
“It is small things that can add together to make a difference,” Stevenson said. “By encouraging others to do the same, the sky is the limit to the progress we can achieve in regards to energy efficiency.”
Justin Koziatek, a nutritional science senior, said he plans to attend the party and he hopes other residents and students will take an interest in the efforts Clean Water Action is taking.
“We are running out of fossil fuel,” Koziatek said. “ We need something new that will not harm the environment, and we need something clean.”
