The month of August not only marks the beginning for a new school year at MSU, but also the beginning of honey harvesting season for beekeepers across the state. But as students return to East Lansing they may be the only ones creating a buzz, as Michigan’s honeybee population is continually disappearing.

I know nothing about beekeeping, however, I have to say that when driving around the countryside throughout Michigan, I see more bee boxes around than ever before. Could the bee population be spreading out since there seems to be a rise in amateur beekeeping?

Erratum:
1. The 130 crops are the total number in the US, not in Michigan.
2. Michigan’s fruits and vegetables that depend on pollination is valued about half a billion annually, not half million.
3. The number of species of bees are either 9 or 10, most scientists agree there are at least 9 now.
