FDA OKs tomatoes, cautions elderly on jalepeno, serrano peppers

July 17, 2008

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it was again safe to eat all types of tomatoes Thursday.

The FDA continued to warn those most at risk, including the elderly and those with weak immune systems, to be cautious about consuming jalepeno and serrano peppers, according to The Associated Press.

Previously tomatoes had been suspected as the cause of the nationwide outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul that has infected 1,196 people in 42 states since April, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Nineteen cases have been reported in Michigan, including six in Ingham County, reported the Michigan Department of Community Health last Friday.

“The FDA and CDC must feel confident that there isn’t a link between salmonella and tomatoes,” said James McCurtis, a spokesman for the Department of Community Health.

McCurtis added that officials may never learn the exact source of the outbreak.

“People might not remember what they eat,” he said. “You almost have to go back to the drawing board and talk to those people (infected) again.”
