Overhaul of Republican Party will help win election in fall
Tweet
The Republican Party, originally associated with the likes of Abraham Lincoln, is in shambles today. Its underlying philosophy, practiced by people like former president Ronald Reagan, has been completely undermined by the new crop of neoconservatives who rather resemble statist totalitarians than anything else. The republican brand needs to be repackaged anew if it’s to have any significance in American politics for the next generation.
Drastic measures ought to be taken to renew confidence in the stated philosophy of small government and minimal intrusion into private lives. The neoconservatives need to be named, stripped of and banned from party membership. These neoconservatives include people like President George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, and Sen. John McCain. The paleoconservatives of the Lincoln variety include patriots like Rep. Ron Paul and Sen. Chuck Hagel.
The two-party system has a psychological stranglehold on electoral choice; therefore, I feel it’s much more important to purge the ranks of the traditionally conservative party rather than attempt the imposed impossibility of elevating a third party to the former significance and influence of the Republicans. If these measures are not employed, then I fear we’ll see the Republican Party completely overrun by theocratic statists even more so, leaving the nation with a choice between two enormous government parties, as we do currently for the presidential election.

Way to go Liberal Statist News, you tell me you’re all about objectivity then give my piece an inappropriate title. It wasn’t supposed to be about the short term frivolous U.S. presidential election, it’s supposed to be about the enduring presence of a philosophy most importantly within the Congress.
That title is libel, I am a victim of libel.

Dan, while i’m not an expert on what constitutes libel, it is rather unfortunate that your article was handed the title it did. If I read your article correctly, which the person who titled it obviously did not do, it seems that you may have a constructive, albiet slightly controvesial recommendation for the distant future of the Republican Party. While i may not necessarily agree with all of what you have said, and am a bit ambivalent at allowing for things such as “purging” to take place, I believe your criticism of the GOP was superior to the standard irrational “Bush bashing” which this “paper” supports.

First of all, if you think Lincoln was a great example of what a conservative should be you’re crazy. He has more in common with the neo-cons like Bush than with conservatives like Coolidge and Reagan. If you think Chuck Hagel, a liberal Senator, is a great example of conservativism in the GOP you’re out of your mind. We all get you’re against the war but just because a Republican is against the war doesn’t make him a conservative.
I agree that the GOP needs to find its conservative roots, which is why McCain must lose this election. Its conservative roots are not to be found in people like Ron Paul but rather in those that believe in the philosophies of Reagan and Coolidge. We need strong conservatives in the tradition of Newt Gingrich to step up, rather than left-wing RINO’s like McCain.

Agreed that your article was miss titled, badly, and the SN wonders why people don’t write in? And agree with your over all point about the ® becoming conservatives again. But examples like Newt Gingrich and J.C. Watts would be more appropriate then Paul and Hagel.

I think it is completely understood across the board that the two party system is in dissaray and needs drastic changes. Having this two party system has caused our latest election to become once again “the lesser of two evils.” I will be voting for a person knowing that although he may not always be on top of his game, he is far more a safer choice.

You are hilarious. You call people wackos based on disagreeing with you, but you compare Newt Gingrich to Adolf Hitler.
Being a liberal is okay, you do not have to bash the other side to justify it.

Dan:
You label Hagel a patriot but McCain a RINO. Is this simply because you disagree with McCain?
McCain is well known for bucking the party, as Hagel is currently doing. It appears that your argumentation is based around the modern wars, and thus those who you agree with are patriots and those you disagree with are immediately banished.

It saddens me that people stoop to the left-right false dichotomy.
You need to zoom out and look at fiscal and social stances.
Chuck Hagel is very fiscally conservative and modestly socially liberable, a more Libertarian stance which I enjoy.

People are calling Ron Paul crazy because talk radio and nightly news says so, not based on individually formed opinions. Years ago Ron Paul warned about the line of credit to Bear Stearns, and how much acknowledgment does he get for his spot on prediction? I hear crickets, he must be crazy.
MikeThe Civil War is enormously complex and so the major players of that struggle enjoy the morally consuming topic of slavery. Slavery was an important issue of the Civil War, but my God it wasn’t the only issue. Like most wars, Lincoln’s administration was a victim of a third party protecting its own interests. The British Empire wasn’t exactly appreciative of a Scottish engineer memorizing and selling industrial secrets to American business (among countless other things) so they had the prerogative to split us up.Mr. Lincoln’s most important achievement was the introduction of the U.S. Treasury greenback temporarily returning us to the Constitutional fiat authority of the government, as opposed to the private banks which we are currently victimized with.
Yes I agree that states rights were violated and the centralization of power is disconcerting, but protecting the Union was a tantamount task to prevent the British Empire from dominating us once again. They eventually got their way with the Federal Reserve Act, but at least Mr. Lincoln postponed it significantly.
Good comments overall. I’m sorry if I didn’t name everyone’s favorite conservatives, I haven’t done exhaustive research, but clearly no one has or can. I think that it could be agreed that there are neoconservatives who are basically far left fiscal liberals, and their presence within the party has destroyed it.

Whoops, liberal I mean. McCain missed more than half the votes in 2007, he wasn’t the only one running for president. I disapprove of him for one because he doesn’t do the six figure job he’s being paid to do currently!
