Munir pleads not guilty

July 3, 2008

After facing charges of using the computer for criminal behavior, an MSU visiting research associate from the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center had his plea entered as not guilty at his hearing Thursday, as he wished to remain mute.

Iqbal Munir is facing charges for illegal use of the Internet and child sexually abusive activity. He allegedly made plans for a sexual meeting with who he believed was a 14-year-old girl after talking with her online.
If convicted, Munir could face prison time and deportation.

A docking conference has been scheduled for July 21 at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice in Detroit, giving Munir time to discuss possible immigration issues.

He is allowed to continue using MSU computers for his research, but cannot have contact with minors or use any social networking sites.
