Former MSU men’s basketball player Drew Neitzel is in Las Vegas trying to make his dream come true.

So far, his chances appear to be better than hitting the jackpot on a slot machine.

Neitzel is playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves’ summer league team, trying his best to impress scouts and make his dream to play in the NBA a reality.

In two games for the Timberwolves, Neitzel is averaging seven points and shooting 75 percent from the field.

“There are a lot of people here who could be giving me an opportunity in the future,” Neitzel said. “I don’t control a lot as far as playing time, but it’s a matter of going out and taking advantage of the situation I’m given.”

On Monday, in his first summer league game, Neitzel caught some eyes with a 10-point scoring effort in which he went 2-for-2 from behind the 3-point line against the Dallas Mavericks. He was solid again Wednesday, scoring four points on 2-for-3 shooting from the field against the Los Angeles Lakers.

“I thought I played well and made good decisions,” Neitzel said of Wednesday night’s performance. “I hit a couple shots off the screen and that’s a big part of the NBA game.”

Neitzel said he hasn’t had a difficult time adjusting to the NBA 3-point line, which is longer than it is in college.

“It’s not a huge adjustment,” Neitzel said.

“You just have to focus in a little bit more. I took a lot of deep threes in college, and now shooting from that line looks so close.”

Despite limited time on the court — he’s averaging 14 minutes per game — Neitzel has turned some heads with his quality play and impressive work ethic, Timberwolves assistant general manager Rob Babcock said.

“(Neitzel) does what the coaches ask him to do, and he doesn’t make mistakes,” Babcock said. “It makes life so much easier on us when a player like Drew comes in and fits in right away and knows what they are doing out there.”

Babcock credits Neitzel’s college pedigree for his ability to transition smoothly to the higher level of competition.

“When a player comes in from a program like MSU that’s been coached by Tom Izzo, you know they are going to be well disciplined and be a solid defensive player,” he said. “He’s a tough competitor and has been so well schooled defensively by coach Izzo.”

Babcock likes the attributes that Neitzel brings to the court and wouldn’t be surprised to see him make an NBA squad in the near future.

“Drew is going to have a chance to make an NBA roster, and hopefully it’s ours,” he said. “It’s still too early to tell, and there’s still a ways to go, but I’ve been very pleased with how he has played.”

Neitzel said he’ll continue to work hard and prove that he’d be a valuable asset to an NBA squad.

“It’s a matter of me going out there and doing what I do,” he said. “I’m going to go out there and play to my potential and whatever happens, happens.”
