19-year-old woman sentenced for actions during Cedar Fest

By Abby Lubbers (Last updated: 08/13/08 2:44pm)

A 19-year-old woman was sentenced to 15 days in the Ingham County Jail on Wednesday for her participation in the Cedar Fest riot.

Michelle Sprenkel, who pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor offenses of disorderly conduct and indecent exposure, was sentenced by 54-B District Court Judge David L. Jordan.

Sprenkel also will be on probation for one year, must complete 10 days of community service and is required to pay $1,994.40 in fines.

The court also entered an order prohibiting Sprenkel from purchasing, possessing or consuming illegal drugs or alcohol for one year.

Sprenkel has been restricted from enrolling or entering any Michigan public community college or university for one year.

Duh!

08/13/08 2:56pm

Why would the court need to enter an order restricting illigal activity. It’s illegal and by definition is already restricted.

What?

08/13/08 2:58pm

Does this mean that after 1 year she will be allowed to purchase, possess, and consume illegal drugs? This girl by be worth getting to know.

No

08/13/08 3:30pm

This means that, as part of her probation, if she purchases alcohol or illegal drugs, and is caught, she will suffer greater consequences (like more/longer jail time). Whereas, without probation they might have let her off the hook with a warning or probation.

Insane

08/13/08 3:50pm

This is totally crazy! MCL 769.1g is for people who’s actions lead to a riot! How is this right? I cannot believe that MSU students aren’t in an uproar while East Lansing overly uses its poor excuse for a justice system. What are you doing MSU students?! It’s time Michigan State takes back its town and East Lansing realizes that without MSU, East Lansing is nothing. This isn’t justice, and everyone knows it. Time to take action.

The Champ

08/13/08 4:51pm

MOST IMPORTANTLY is she good looking? the article failed to mention that critical fact.

The Champ

Smart 10 year old jerk

Perhaps EL isn’t ‘owned’ by MSU and its students, but without the university EL would just be another mid-michigan town you drive through.

Idiot?

08/13/08 5:09pm

Hey Champ, it was me who posted that under insane, and I’m puzzled how I’m the idiot looking under your post. Consider the facts: 80% of EL is provided by MSU. Want to consider the facts about economic structure? Why don’t you leave this up to people who are intelligent enough to realize that EL is making a very big mistake, mark my words.

Marc

08/13/08 6:56pm

I am very glad that the courts are taking a strong stance on this. regardless of who came first the city or the university, it is inappropriate behavior that needs to be dealt with harshly. i just hope that other students over time realize that there is a consequence to actions.

Really?

08/13/08 7:49pm

Marc…really? Let’s start issuing the death penalty for MIPs then. For sure it will show that there are SERIOUS consequences for offenses. But back on Earth…what’s the deal? So she flashed her funbags…who cares? Do you really think that’s what led to the riot? Nope. I’ll put my bet on the ELPD showing up in riot gear. Don’t believe me? I DARE you to read the 2003 commission about Cedar Fest. Then we can talk about who’s to blame. Facts are EL does not prevent this. Primarily because they profit from it happening. Roughly about $80,000.

Steve

08/13/08 8:14pm

Really – You are telling me that police in riot gear is what causes people to turn into idiots? Is that some kind of joke? So if we see armed soldiers somewhere in public then it’s no wonder we engage in combat with them? The presence of police makes people act like dumbasses… the only dumbass here is you.

Marc

08/13/08 8:36pm

Steve is right. the simple presence of the police is not what causes people to turn into idiots. if that were true there would be riots everywhere. the police in 2003 were wrong. i completely agree. but prior actions by the police do not justify lewd and indecent exposure.

Steve

08/14/08 5:07am

It is now 2008. The students that were involved in the riots of 2003 should be graduated by now (assuming they can finish somewhat on time). Stop using that excuse.

I took a look at the MSU Police Cedar Riot link. They actually took the time to render a logo that says, “Cedar Fest, not a party anymore…” What a bunch of tools.

I’m curious, did Michelle Sprenkel flash a few “rioters” to be nabbed for that indecent exposure charge? Check that, I’m going to friend her on Facebook.com

So an education is something they can bar you from having the “privilege” of access to?
Pitiful excuse for a penalty for college kids being college kids. I’ve seen far worse behavior from people who have gone on to become incredibly productive elements in our society when I was in school in the 80’s. Somehow the folk’s in charge of the rules have lost all sense of perspective.

Help the students

08/15/08 12:24pm

S.Evans, Welcome to East Lansing now. This town hates student’s. Love there parents money.
Look up 769.1g law. It allows all college towns in the state to throw kids out of school for being college kids.
By the way East Lansing is also trying to buy out Cedar Village and turn it into upscale condos and shops. They want the students gone from this area!
I wish Michigan State would build affordable apartments and a small town on campus. That way all the money would stay at Michigan State. GO GREEN!!!!
East Lansing can get there wish, no students, no money.
Good Bye East Lansing.

S. Evans

08/15/08 10:30pm

I moved to NC after I graduated and seem to have not paid attention to how East Lansing was invaded by people looking for some kind of illusory suburban bliss. I was there when people like Lash Larrow provided a constant reminder to people inclined to try and constrain the joy of freedom of college life. Does anyone stand up for the fun of being in college these days up there? What type of delusions does the city of East Lansing have that they would even exist if MSU students, for decades, hadn’t created their town.

East Lansing sucks. None of these are jailable offenses, most of the people they arrested that night didn’t even do anything wrong. Oh man I hope some kid gets found not guilty and sues the crap out of them for this insanity

Agreed

08/16/08 1:53pm

S.Evans, NickT, I agree with you TOTALLY. This is taken out of proportion so badly is barely comprehendible. Most of these people did what, throw a can? Flash their boobs? And THAT’S worth the fines, jail time, and being suspended from school? I’m an MSU alum and if there’s anything I’m ashamed of it’s of East Lansing acting like a bunch of pricks. This has been happening for years and from what I hear, this years wasn’t that big of a deal. C’mon spartans! Help out your family! None of us think this is right…do something about it!

Ya, right, how dumb do they think they are. Given 4 or more people together can be deemed a riot in East Lansing.

marc you are a very stupid, vindictive, hypersensitive, and irrational person.

“Steve is right. the simple presence of the police is not what causes people to turn into idiots. if that were true there would be riots everywhere”

Really, Marc? You think seeing a cop car on the side of the road as you walk by has the same immediate social consequences as dozens of police in riot gear surrounding a large group of milling, drunk people? Do you consider yourself a stupid person? You are.

Steve

08/17/08 6:14pm

Smokey and [worthless piece of shit] copkiller,

Can either of you two morons show me some proof of this? You both make claims that seeing a cop in riot gear makes you act like an idiot. Can either of you back this up with some kind of legitimate study or something other than your anecdotal idiocy?

Steve

08/17/08 6:17pm

Not to mention this girl is accused of indecent exposure. So seeing cops in riot gear causes girls to take off their shirts?

yes I do

08/17/08 9:03pm

Steve, you’re a moron. Of course we have evidence. As I said before, look up the 2003 commission where sociologists and psychologists testified that cops in riot gear DO have very significant influence. Go back to your day job because litigation clealy isn’t your thing.

Steve

08/19/08 7:01am

Really? Please show me some of this evidence. Show the rest of us this 2003 commission that supposedly says that cops in riot gear make people act like idiots. (I’ll forget about the fact that sociology and psychology testimony is not a scientific study, it is simply the OPINION of a few people)

here we go again

It does sound a bit harsh, but we don’t know how she acted in court, if she had a decent lawyer. What we do know is that EL and MSU have a symbiotic relationship that would be much healthier were in not based in conflict. I believe we all learned about sharing and cooperation in kindergarten, didn’t we?

Steve

08/19/08 4:15pm

So you are telling me that if something comes gift-wrapped in a PHD that makes it fact and should be taken as gospel? That is some dangerous advice. After all, there are people with PHDs that insist the Holocaust didn’t exist, that we never landed on the moon… shall I go on? The only thing their testimony does is simply reiterate the fact that a large portion of our population are morons.

hmm...

08/19/08 6:55pm

Steve, so what you’re suggesting is that we specifically shouldn’t trust PhDs because one in hundreds of thousands may suggest we didn’t land on the moon? That it by far the most idoic thing I’ve ever heard. Education makes people less trustworthy? I think not, sir.

Steve

08/19/08 7:44pm

Evidence is what we should trust, not some guys opinion just because it comes with a PHD. Show me some evidence. I’d be happy to read some scientific studies to back up their claims.

I am the mother of Michelle and I feel very strongly that the punishment does not fit the crime. A fine would have been sufficient. The night she was arrested she blew a zero and was made to do PBTs daily for over 3 months. Where is the justification in that. Also the jail time cost her her flight attendant job. She is an ambitiuos 18 year old that made a stupid mistake for one second and is being punished too extremely.

Steve

08/20/08 5:16am

Collette you are an idiot for a mother. It’s no wonder she has turned out the way she has. To be honest, I cannot recall the last time I made a “stupid mistake” like that. After all, it’s all part of the college experience apparently showing up to an unlawful gathering to flash the crowd in hopes of getting tear-gassed. I personally enjoy seeing all of these morons taken to the cleaners so that the future idiots of MSU are deterred from such behavior. That way, those of us that actually come to MSU for an education, not just an excuse to act like a dumbass and trash the school’s reputation for 4+ years, can be proud.

Nicholas

08/20/08 7:49am

Hey, Steve, don’t ever knock my mother on her parenting skills or intelligence. I am fifteen months older than my sister, the one that you included into your “morons” comment, and I want to know just where the fuck you get off calling people “idiots” and “morons” when you don’t have a clue what type of person they are, or the situation they were placed in. There’s nothing I can do except for give you some advice. Next time you want to open up your cock gobbler and give another half-wit opinion, you could piss off a Marine that’s not on the other side of the world. Go fuck yourself you fucking queer.

Collette, I don’t have children and I’m sure when I do they will be far from perfect. But let me tell you what, I also worked since it was legal, was on the honor roll in high school, and even graduated with honors and somehow I managed to make it through my college years without flashing my ta-tas to a crowd of strangers. People like your daughter give my alma mater a bad name and that just doesn’t sit right with me!

As a parent of a MSU student I think it is time the parents of college students ban together and stop this nonsense.

Evidence

08/20/08 12:38pm

Steve,

The sight of officers in riot gear undoubtedly stimulates the amygdala, which causes adrenaline to be released into the brains of pretty much anyone around. Under normal circumstances, this should be enough to trigger a ‘fear response’, which would tell an individual to avoid the situation.
However, when large groups of people are gathered together, at night, and there is alcohol involved, the brain is far likelier to activate a ‘fight response’ to this stimulus.

Michelle is my best friend, I was standing next to her the night she was arrested. Shit was crazy! Anyway, she was my DD, she hadn’t had a drop to drink that whole night, yet she still gets probation for this where she can’t drink? Ummm, how does this make sense? Unfortunately Michelle is being made an example of. Hey kids, don’t show your funbags, you’ll go to jail. Sorry Michelle, i’m not questioning why you where arrested, I think thats fair, but the punishment and fines you recieved is not. I’ll be at the next cedar fest, i’ll just wear my riot gear too!

Steve

08/20/08 9:42pm

So let me get this straight, your “evidence” is that in a crowd people tend to act towards police in riot gear in a “fight” mode. I wasn’t aware that showing your chest to a crowd of people was a survival technique. I am curious as to where in the evolutionary process that has helped humans survive. I also find it a bit humorous how you compare a bunch of drunk idiots with the police in the vicinity to the Nazi control of Germany.

Although the penalty for the flasher seems harsh, I am certain she must be held responsible for her senseless behavior and profound idiocy. DO NOT blame the culture, peacefulness, and vibrancy that defines East Lansing. And NEVER blame Michigan State – an institution that has helped transform our state, the country, and world. The individuals who participated in the disturbance chose to do so and took the risk of consequences. You can have a good time drinking without being stupid. When it comes down to it the girl was acting stupid and I am sure will never flash in public again. GO GREEN!

Collette

08/21/08 2:50pm

To Rob, Yes she does deserve punishment, our complaint was that the punishment was harsh. Especially since she wasn’t drinking that night and that all her daily PBT’s were zero for the following three months. She is being punished for crimes she never committed. She should only be punished for the crime she committed.

To Steve, again, the whole issue is as stated to Rob. She isn’t saying she doesn’t deserve punishment, just not so harsh. Also, why are you referring to vandalism, she never did any of that. You should read and think before making your comments.

If anyone out here is interested the 769.1g may have civil rights issues. It addresses students and does not effect public in general.
We need to question our law makers on this. Contact ACLU and fill a complaint. A law should not single out one group or individual.
Plus it can be added to charges after the fact. This law has large holes in it. I think it needs to be questioned.

So you get a ticket and show up court . The judge sees that you were in a general area and tacks on another charge?
