Why would the court need to enter an order restricting illigal activity. It’s illegal and by definition is already restricted.

This means that, as part of her probation, if she purchases alcohol or illegal drugs, and is caught, she will suffer greater consequences (like more/longer jail time). Whereas, without probation they might have let her off the hook with a warning or probation.

This is totally crazy! MCL 769.1g is for people who’s actions lead to a riot! How is this right? I cannot believe that MSU students aren’t in an uproar while East Lansing overly uses its poor excuse for a justice system. What are you doing MSU students?! It’s time Michigan State takes back its town and East Lansing realizes that without MSU, East Lansing is nothing. This isn’t justice, and everyone knows it. Time to take action.

Marc…really? Let’s start issuing the death penalty for MIPs then. For sure it will show that there are SERIOUS consequences for offenses. But back on Earth…what’s the deal? So she flashed her funbags…who cares? Do you really think that’s what led to the riot? Nope. I’ll put my bet on the ELPD showing up in riot gear. Don’t believe me? I DARE you to read the 2003 commission about Cedar Fest. Then we can talk about who’s to blame. Facts are EL does not prevent this. Primarily because they profit from it happening. Roughly about $80,000.

Student’s cannot get a fair trial or sentencing in East Lansing 54B Court. They want to fry every student.
Motion for change of venue if you are about to go to trial in East Lansing!!!!!!!
They welcome students back from summer break. The student money machines have arrived!!!
To all students and families, retain a lawyer if your going to MSU.
East Lansing has more rules and regulations all to tap students for money. Read East Lansing’s home page. Student’s Beware!!!
Just trying to help students. Have a great year at M.S.U..

So an education is something they can bar you from having the “privilege” of access to?
Pitiful excuse for a penalty for college kids being college kids. I’ve seen far worse behavior from people who have gone on to become incredibly productive elements in our society when I was in school in the 80’s. Somehow the folk’s in charge of the rules have lost all sense of perspective.

S.Evans, Welcome to East Lansing now. This town hates student’s. Love there parents money.
Look up 769.1g law. It allows all college towns in the state to throw kids out of school for being college kids.
By the way East Lansing is also trying to buy out Cedar Village and turn it into upscale condos and shops. They want the students gone from this area!
I wish Michigan State would build affordable apartments and a small town on campus. That way all the money would stay at Michigan State. GO GREEN!!!!
East Lansing can get there wish, no students, no money.
Good Bye East Lansing.

I moved to NC after I graduated and seem to have not paid attention to how East Lansing was invaded by people looking for some kind of illusory suburban bliss. I was there when people like Lash Larrow provided a constant reminder to people inclined to try and constrain the joy of freedom of college life. Does anyone stand up for the fun of being in college these days up there? What type of delusions does the city of East Lansing have that they would even exist if MSU students, for decades, hadn’t created their town. As for the purported “embarrasssment” felt by alumni over what occurred related to this event – my reaction….I emailed three people the link to the coverage and we all had a laugh.

East Lansing says it wants to get along with students but you should read all the codes directed at students. They also want students to register there parties with them. Ya, right, how dumb do they think they are. Given 4 or more people together can be deemed a riot in East Lansing. By the way the ACLU is watching East Lansing and how this is handled. Some of the kids where given 769.1g even and some where arrested 2 to 4 hours prior riot. But because they were arrested in that area they face the same punishment as the others. SICK OF EAST LANSING! Hit them where it hurts there pocketbooks. If some of you only new all the facts it’d make you sick.

Go study gravity or plants. However, when you do some reading you’ll find that all psychology is opinion and theory! For christs sake, there’s none of your ‘scientific fact’ that the mind exists! It’s all opinion yes, but the consolidated opinion of persons much more qualified than yourself.
I am the mother of Michelle and I feel very strongly that the punishment does not fit the crime. A fine would have been sufficient. The night she was arrested she blew a zero and was made to do PBTs daily for over 3 months. Where is the justification in that. Also the jail time cost her her flight attendant job. She is an ambitiuos 18 year old that made a stupid mistake for one second and is being punished too extremely. Didn’t you ever make a mistake in your younger days and learn from that? And why are the courts taking education away from our youth. And a comment to The Champ about the bag over her head. Have you ever seen an attractive mug shot? You’d certainly eat your words if you checked her out on my space, she’s gorgeous. At her sentencing the judge even said she had the least charge of all, so why the harsh punishment.

Collette you are an idiot for a mother. It’s no wonder she has turned out the way she has. To be honest, I cannot recall the last time I made a “stupid mistake” like that. After all, it’s all part of the college experience apparently showing up to an unlawful gathering to flash the crowd in hopes of getting tear-gassed. I personally enjoy seeing all of these morons taken to the cleaners so that the future idiots of MSU are deterred from such behavior. That way, those of us that actually come to MSU for an education, not just an excuse to act like a dumbass and trash the school’s reputation for 4+ years, can be proud.

But let me tell you what, I also worked since it was legal, was on the honor roll in high school, and even graduated with honors and somehow I managed to make it through my college years without flashing my ta-tas to a crowd of strangers.
Collette, I agree the punishment does not fit the crime. East Lansing has issues with students. I would contact the ACLU regarding this. In the past riot a student did the exact same thing and the ACLU fought for the student and won. Aclu has been watching for civil rights issues regarding recent Cedar Fest. As a parent of a MSU student I think it is time the parents of college students ban together and stop this nonsense. East Lansing has got to learn to get along with students. Our students are learning to become adults. Being at college is the first step and to take that away from them is not right. You daughter did not harm anyone. I’ve seen worse at football games and tallgate parties. These are suppose to be adults? Not students mind you, but alumi. I wish your daughter the best and hope she returns to MSU. To all of you, support the students. They are our future!!! Everyone makes mistakes! We are human, that is how we learn.
Don’t pass jugdement unless you have the whole story!!!!! I feel sorry for those who think they are perfect. Your day will come!!!!

Steve,

The sight of officers in riot gear undoubtedly stimulates the amygdala, which causes adrenaline to be released into the brains of pretty much anyone around. Under normal circumstances, this should be enough to trigger a ‘fear response’, which would tell an individual to avoid the situation.
However, when large groups of people are gathered together, at night, and there is alcohol involved, the brain is far likelier to activate a ‘fight response’ to this stimulus. This response is the result of a primal network of neurons that are completely outside of consciousness.
By clearly displaying symbols of physical control (shields, teargas, uniforms, etc.) the riot gear absolutely increases the likelihood of aggressiveness in the gathered crowd.
That’s really basic social psychology.

Also, congrats on once again proving Godwin’s Law!

Yes what i did was obviously not the smartest decision i’ve made throughout my life i am not afraid to admit that. I attended that riot to show my support for MSU i had no planned intention of exposing myself to the crowd. There are such things as stupid mistakes and that night is the perfect example of one. Im not saying i dont deserve to be punished i just feel that the punishment given to me is a little extreme for the crime. I have no previous offenses not even a traffic violation and to come down on me so hard is a litle much. There’s also no need to be so harsh to my mother, you know that if it was your child no matter what they did you would stand up for them like a good parent would. She has great parenting skills she taught me right from wrong, to get an education, and to be kind to others; her part is done now its up to me if i decide to follow her teachings and for the most part i have. What i did at Cedar Fest or any other night in that matter, does not make me a bad person, im a good person who just made a bad decision.

Unfortunately Michelle is being made an example of. Hey kids, don’t show your funbags, you’ll go to jail. Sorry Michelle, i’m not questioning why you where arrested, I think thats fair, but the punishment and fines you recieved is not.
So let me get this straight, your “evidence” is that in a crowd people tend to act towards police in riot gear in a “fight” mode. I wasn’t aware that showing your chest to a crowd of people was a survival technique. I am curious as to where in the evolutionary process that has helped humans survive. I also find it a bit humorous how you compare a bunch of drunk idiots with the police in the vicinity to the Nazi control of Germany. I’m sure those that were actually under Nazi control would be appalled by your comparison of Cedar Fest to Nazi control. I also find it interesting how you say that attending an event solely by choice somehow induces a fight/flight response. Moreover, the police were not even in full riot-gear anyways. Most of them weren’t wearing much more than a helmet (which was to protect them from brain damage from the crowd of morons throwing objects).

Collette – So getting good grades some how negates someones responsibility for their crimes? Since I’ve been on the honor roll through all of high school and college, that would negate some of my responsibility if I came and vandalized your home?

Nicholas – You know you have nothing intelligent left to say when you must resort to making comments such as, “Go fuck yourself you fucking queer.” I didn’t know that posting on the statenews.com website was some how tied to homosexuality. I guess you learn something new everyday huh.

I’m sick of idiots like Michelle and all the others busted at Cedar Fest giving my school a bad reputation. Contrary to what “Help the students” says, attending college is a privilege, not a right. It’s a privilege that should be taken away from every idiot that does not deserve it.

To Rob, Yes she does deserve punishment, our complaint was that the punishment was harsh. Especially since she wasn’t drinking that night and that all her daily PBT’s were zero for the following three months. She is being punished for crimes she never committed. She should only be punished for the crime she committed.

To Steve, again, the whole issue is as stated to Rob. She isn’t saying she doesn’t deserve punishment, just not so harsh. Also, why are you referring to vandalism, she never did any of that. You should read and think before making your comments.

I live in a community outside of Lansing and have a MSU student. East Lansing has issues with students. The police feel threatened. For some reason they are overwhelmed with the number of students in there community. You’d think they would understand, but they don’t. East lansing funds there town by ticketing students. I am very upset with there treatment of all these students. I intend to support these kids any way I can.
I didn’t know that having an opinion on an issue and sharing it on statenews.com was a mental disorder. It’s not in the DSM4 so I guess I’ll have to look forward to it being added to the DSM5 in a few years.

Also, I am not sure where I said anywhere that Michelle vandalized anything. Rather, it was an analogy to committing another type of crime and some how getting good grades would vitiate my responsibility.

Additionally, I am not sure where being in the military was germane to the topic at hand. Yes, as a matter of fact I am in the military. However, I did not see where it was necessary to bring that into the conversation since someone being unable to keep their shirt on in a large crowd really has nothing to do with military service. Maybe I am wrong, but I do not see the connection between the two.

Steve,
Trashing fellow MSU students just is not right. Each of these students got caught up in moment. Some of them where arrested prior to the Cedar fest riot. Some where even arrested leaving the area at 10:00pm after watching from Grand River. So trashing them is not right. Some of the kids arrested did indeed cause a major problem that nite and should be given jail time. But not all where involved with the riot. Some where watching from houses on Cedar St near Grand River and some other the other side of Bogue. So unless you have all the facts you need to move on and stop judging. The newspaper and East Lansing website do not have all the facts listed or when they where arrested. East Lansing decided to include all those arrested between 10:00pm and 3:00am in the riot, even if they where not involved in any way with the riot. The facts are not what they seem. The call to leave was not given till 1:55am. The sign on Cedar and Watersedge did not come down till 1:46am. This is the area where the problem took place. So please do some research before you start throwing anymore stones. OK. Some of these MSU students really are getting a bad rap. Trust me. I am helping them anyway I can.

First of all and by far most of all, I have known this family for along time and they are very fine people. Beyond that I am happy to read all the supportive people on their side, they should have that support. I as a mother know the trials and the difficult task of raising kids, and know one person has a book to read how to do it. Us parents do the best we know and that is all we can do. The punishment was way beyond the crime.
As far as this STEVE person, get a life, it seems you have way to much time on your hands to write every chance you have a minute. Also, STEVE, one word of advice from a person that really and truly knows and belives, watch what you judge and what you say because………….“WHAT GOES AROUND WILL COME AROUND!!!!” and that is a fact.. SO GOOD LUCK STEVE, I hope one day I can say to you “I TOLD YOU SO!, YOU SHOULD OF NOT JUDGED, AND KEPT YOU MOUTH SHUT.”……………AMEN
Good Luck to the very special Sprenkel family. We love you.

Steve- in a usual situation I would have just beat the living hell out of you and that be that. Unfortunately, I’m stuck way the hell over here and must resort to childish name calling to express my anger. I just assumed you were gay by having so much free time on your hands while attending school. I know when I hung out at MSU, the last thing I would ever do was to go floating around the web and making fun of people. It’s called a “social life” you might want to give one of those a go instead of playing on your porn box. Also, Reserves don’t count… FAG

“Trashing fellow MSU students just is not right.”

-Trashing our school’s reputation is not right. Those that do ruin MSU’s reputation should be used to make an example out of.

“Each of these students got caught up in moment.”

-Each and every person there CHOSE to be there. Being surrounded by idiots does not give you the excuse to act like one. There’s a reason why the few dozen arrested idiots were singled out of a crowd of 5000, and it wasn’t because they were just innocent bystanders.

Also, regardless of what time they were arrested, they should all be charged the same. It was the same crowd of morons at 10pm that were told to leave at 1am. The gathering was illegal from the get-go, the police just let it go on for sometime to wait for back up and mostly for politics.

Collette,
Here the case for reference regarding ACLU case won against East Lansing.
Woman Ordered to Pay Restitution for Exposing Breasts – A Michigan State University student was charged with indecent exposure for briefly “flashing” her breasts during a street gathering following MSU’s loss in the NCAA basketball tournament last year. Although there was no connection between the woman’s act and the property damage caused by others during the post-game “riot”, a judge ordered her to pay $2,300 in restitution for the property damage (in addition to seven days in jail). The ACLU filed an amicus brief, arguing that the restitution order violates due process. (City of East Lansing v. Quitmeyer; Cooperating Attorneys: Prof. Dorean M. Koenig and Frederick M. Baker, Jr.).
Good Luck!!!!

If the gathering was so illegal steve why didn’t the police just block that street off earlier on in the night. They knew the whole day that people were trying to do the cedar fest that night, they had plenty of time to get there back up in and find a way to stop the riot before it even happened. Did you ever think of that smartass!! Oh yeah… the kids arrested at the riot didn’t give MSU a bad reputation if you haven’t noticed MSU has had a rep for years. If you dont like the thought of your college having a bd reputation maybe you should have thought a little harder abut going to one of the top party schools in Michigan!!!

If anyone out here is interested the 769.1g may have civil rights issues. It addresses students and does not effect public in general.
We need to question our law makers on this. Contact ACLU and fill a complaint. A law should not single out one group or individual.
Plus it can be added to charges after the fact. This law has large holes in it. I think it needs to be questioned.
Steve,
So you get a ticket and show up court . The judge sees that you were in a general area and tacks on another charge? Even thou you weren’t near the problem and just passing by. HMMM? Is this right.
Gee Steve, What do you think? Trashing MSU? I think not!!! These are some major facts East Lansing and the newspapers neglected to include in there reports. Sure hope you don’t find yourself walking within a 4 block area where a party has gotten out of hand and get pick up for just walking down street after having a few beers downtown. This did indeed happen to some of those students who you are trashing. Think about it!!!! It could happen to you!!!!!!
