ASMSU’s Academic Assembly will receive more than $3,000 for new office furniture, as determined Thursday at the Student Assembly meeting. Student Assembly’s Finance Committee also voted to give funds to a Halloween event for children, but opted not to almost double the tailgating budget.
ASMSU is MSU’s undergraduate student government.
Office furniture
The Finance Committee unanimously voted to spend $3,007.96 on four desks, four chairs and four envelope trays for two empty Academic Assembly offices.
Sandte Stanley, Academic Assembly vice chairperson for external affairs, researched the desks and chairs for the rooms, one of which she will occupy. Since the rooms were previously occupied by other university groups, no chairs or desks were left inside.
Stanley said ASMSU was only approved to buy furniture from four stores — Office Max, Office Depot, DBI Business Interiors and University Stores.
Stanley’s choices were from Office Max and DBI Business Interiors.
“The reason I didn’t pick anything from the University Stores is because it didn’t match,” Stanley said at the meeting.
The money will come from the Student Assembly’s special projects portion of the budget because Academic Assembly does not have the funding to afford the furniture.
Safe Halloween
The Finance Committee voted to give $1,090 to Safe Halloween, an annual event sponsored by the greek system. More than 4,000 people attend the event each Halloween.
Tailgating funds
A bill to add $7,000 to ASMSU’s tailgating budget failed in a vote Thursday. The bill, introduced by Kyle Dysarz, Student Assembly vice chairperson for external affairs, proposed an additional $1,000 per home football game to the tailgating budget.
The money would have been used to pay the Physical Plant for post-game cleanup. The current tailgating budget is $8,000, and goes toward a live DJ and blow-up activities.
Dysarz said ASMSU had not been fined for post-game cleanup in the past, but they have been told they could potentially be fined.
