Voter registration process not as complicated as it seems

While reading through James Harrison’s editorial Rogers’ law could affect your vote (SN 9/24), I found his anecdote entertaining and thanked it for bringing up an important point — how students can register to vote. However, I felt his discussion of student registration insufficient.

Registering to vote as a student is simple, even easier than applying for an absentee ballot. While the Michigan laws may sound complicated when you read them, or hear gossip, updating your registration to your current address is effortless and rewarding.

Also, students do not need to bring their driver’s license with them when they vote. A student can bring their student ID, passport, state ID or an out-of-state ID. Claiming that one has to have a perfect driver’s license is obscure. It would be the same as requiring that in order to vote you have to change your shoelaces on your shoes, except that you can come in your flip-flops if you want.

What is vital here is to know that there are many myths and exaggerations plaguing people’s rights to vote both securely and comfortably. Some constantly make claims that it affects a student’s health or car insurance. This isn’t true. Placing a sticker on your driver’s license will not change your life. Also, an out-of-state student can register to vote just as smoothly as an in-state student.

The regulations may sound imposing, but relax, you are doing the right thing. Students voting around MSU will help make the community stronger. Remember to register at school by Oct. 6. More information can be found at my.barackobama.com/mistudentvote.

Thanks Craig. You explained Roger’s law in few words and made it very clear how the law works. Unfortunatly, James Harrison sucks at writing and most likely confused too many students. If James can’t spend the 20 minutes at the SOS, he sucks, shouldn’t vote in this election, and is probably very stupid.

voters beware: street canvassers soliciting you to register to vote collect but throw out Republican registrations.

it is safer for Republicans to register in person at the local voter registration office.
