MSU field hockey wins in overtime

The No. 10 MSU field hockey team won an overtime nailbiter over Stanford, 3-2, to remain perfect on the season with a 3-0 record.

The Spartans found themselves down in a game for the first time this season as they headed into halftime. Goals by Stanford’s Stephanie Byrne and Jaimee Erickson put the Cardinal ahead 2-1 at halftime.

In the second half, MSU found a way to tie the game up with a goal by junior midfielder Floor Rijpma, when she rebounded an earlier shot.

“That shows that we have a fight still in us and that we are growing from a deficit as well, which we haven’t faced so far this season,” said head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof.

Junior midfielder Jeamie Deacon scored the winning goal for the Spartans just over three minutes into the overtime period.

“We made our own life very difficult today,” van de Kerkhof said. “If you want to play good hockey it’s not just showing up, you got to go for it. You have to work hard and play smart, and we didn’t do that today most of the time.”
