'MSU Survivor' to test students' skills

September 25, 2008

There aren’t any deserted islands in East Lansing, but teams will still be expected to “OutSmart, OutShine, and OutSpartan” their opponents tonight at the first ever “MSU Survivor.”

Mathematics junior Stephanie Donelko invented the concept of the event.

“I took an initial idea of team competition and translated it into a ‘Survivor’ theme,” she said. “It’s something we haven’t done on campus before.”

Donelko, education and leadership director of the Universities Activities Board, coordinated the event to run much like the popular TV show “Survivor,” but with a unique spin on challenges and team competition.

Challenges include “Color Scavengers,” where teams will go around and find people or items that are certain colors.

Another challenge, “Watering Hole,” has teams run back and forth across the food court with a waterlogged towel, wringing out water in a speedy fashion.

A third includes a food wheel the team will spin to see what item a member will eat — jars of baby food included.

There are a total of 10 challenges, as well as an icebreaker in the event of a tie. The winner will be based on a point system — each team will compete in all 10 events.

“Survivor” committee member Genna Cousineau said all teams complete the events together before moving onto the next challenge, because the majority of the activities are timed competitions, she said.

Donelko and her committee have been planning the event for more than a month. The group worked diligently to ensure they covered all bases.

“(We prepared) anything from simple things like designing T-shirts to buying supplies, decorations, music, (creating) rules,” said Cousineau, a zoology sophomore.

Pre-registration began Sept. 17 at the Union. One team is comprised of political theory and constitutional democracy sophomore Erik Redoute and seven of his floormates from Case Hall.

“I don’t know what to expect,” Redoute said. “I’m looking forward to the competition. (My floor) likes to bring home a lot of MSU titles for stuff like this.”

The committee anticipates the event, which begins at 9 p.m., to last until about 1:30 a.m.

“I’m looking forward to the crazy games we have set up for people,” Cousineau said. “I want to see people act goofy.”
