Pink futon accents jazzy, Victorian dorm

September 1, 2008

The State News caught up with MSU social work sophomore Mallori Fogler about her stylish dorm room in Campbell Hall. Fogler and her roommate turned their room that overlooks Grand River Avenue into a unique living space with pink, black and white accents.

The State News How would you describe your room?

Mallori Fogler It’s kind of a mix of all sorts of things. We started doing a zebra print and then pink. I don’t know, just tons of stuff altogether.

SN How did you and your roommate decide to decorate your room like this?

MF Well, the lofts, it was the only way it fit. So, everything else just fell into place because (the lofts) take up so much room. I don’t know, we just kept calling each other as we bought different things. Then we got here and put it all together and it looked good.

SN How did you choose this color scheme?

MF Well, the futon was already pink, so we kind of had to stick with that. Then, we got the carpet for a good price, and it was black and white so we just went with that.

SN How did you get a pink futon?

MF The futon itself already was pink and brown, but the brown didn’t go with the black in the zebra carpet. So then we just got a queen-size fitted bed sheet and covered it.

SN Where did you get most of the materials for your room?

MF IKEA, Target and there’s a store in Sterling Heights called Golden Ridge — it’s like a discount-y furniture store I guess. So those three places.

SN How did you come up with the idea of using peel-n-stick wallpaper?

MF When we were at IKEA we saw it up and it was so cool and it looked really easy, so we bought a bunch of it. We were going to do peel-n-stick wallpaper, and we peeled and stuck it and it kept falling down because our walls here are bumpy and gross. So we just bought rubber cement, and we rubber cemented them to the wall. It took a little longer, but it looks good.

SN How do you like your view?

MF I like it a lot. You can see Grand River Avenue and the window is just big. It’s nice.

SN What is your favorite part of your room?

MF The pillow (on the futon). I love the print, and it’s really soft.

SN What was the inspiration for your room?

MF The very first thing I bought for the room was those Victorian peel-n-stick (decals) that had the picture frames with it and from there I decided that it would be a Victorian-type theme like that.

SN What was the hardest part about decorating a dorm room?

MF That you have no space at all. It’s really difficult to hang things, because the walls cannot be drilled. It took us forever to put up the curtain rod to hang the curtains up.

SN What advice do you have for someone who is trying to spruce up their dorm room?

MF They should go try out IKEA, because they have theme rooms already set up, so they could take ideas from what they already have and take a couple things out of one of the rooms they like and put it in their dorm room, and it could make a huge difference.
