Possible source of E. coli outbreak found

September 26, 2008

The Michigan Department of Community Health has targeted bagged lettuce from a Detroit-based produce distributor as a possible cause of the E. coli outbreak that has affected 26 people in the state.

Aunt Mid’s Produce Company, a wholesale company that provides industrial-sized products to restaurants and institutions, is thought to be at least one of the companies distributing the lettuce
in question.

The MDCH said some of the 26 affected people consumed this lettuce.

“We want to ensure that the public’s health and well-being is protected,” Gregory Holzman, chief medical executive for MDCH, said in a press release. “Even though the investigation is ongoing, available evidence is strongly pointing to iceberg lettuce.”

Seven of the 26 Michigan cases were from MSU. The MDCH said more cases could appear as the state’s investigation proceeds.
