Suspected E. coli strain sends students to hospital

By Justin Harris Originally Published: 09/15/08 7:29pm Modified: 09/15/08 10:44pm 3 comments

Ten MSU students sought medical attention at area hospitals during the past week reporting similar symptoms of bloody diarrhea.

University Physician Beth Alexander said the illness was likely caused by a certain strain of E. coli. Although only two of the cases have been linked to the same strain of bacteria thus far, the remaining eight cases also could be linked to the strain within the week.

“Generally, the infection isn’t serious,” Alexander said. “It’s usually caused by food or water that has been contaminated with that bacteria. I’m hoping we’ll know by (Tuesday).”

Seven of the students were hospitalized, but Alexander said they’re all expected to make quick recoveries.

An investigation to locate the source of the bacteria is being conducted by the Ingham County Health Department.
