ASMSU passes bill, will fund event

October 6, 2008

ASMSU’s Student Assembly Finance Committee unanimously passed a previously controversial bill — giving $2,000 more than requested to fund a documentary and concert on campus.

The bill provides funding to show the political documentary “The Youngest Candidate” at the Auditorium, along with a concert and presentations featuring the film’s soundtrack and cast members on Nov. 2.

ASMSU is MSU’s undergraduate student government.

The bill, which would provide $10,000 to the cause, failed at the Sept. 18 meeting. ASMSU members were concerned with the lack of information as to how the money would be spent. Others weren’t sure the film’s director, Jason Pollock, was nonpartisan, after hearing he spent three years as filmmaker Michael Moore’s assistant.

Pollock presented his film to students Sept. 24 at Snyder Hall. Communication Arts and Sciences representative and Finance Committee member Matthew York attended the screening and delivered a positive review of the film.

The revised bill included a detailed description of how the money would be spent. ASMSU opted to increase the funds, giving $12,000 to the event rather than the requested $10,000.
